An international group of theologians contribute to this collection of essays that reflect on the significance of Christian eschatology for contemporary thought. By drawing upon biblical, historical, dogmatic, and contemporary cultural resources, the authors argue for the centrality of eschatology to the life, activity, and hope of the church in the world, Issues addressed include the understanding of time; the nature of eschatological imagery; the status of apocalyptic and millenarian language; and the political and ecological context of modern eschatology. This important collection offers sober theological reflection on issues attracting widespread attention at the turn of the turn of the millennium.
In recent years, God's nature and attributes have been the centre of numerous attempts at conceptual clarification and critical reflection. This volume contains, besides an introduction to the method of philosophical theology, essays on God's love, immutability, omnipresence, omniscience, simplicity, (im)passibility and omnipotence. Understanding the Attributes of God is not only a highly readable survey of recent developments in philosophical theology, but also aims at making a distinctive contribution. The authors all belong to the so-called 'Utrecht school' in philosophical theology, whose approach is characterised by the cross-fertilization of Anglo-Saxon and continental, philosophical and theological, traditional and recent thinking. This volume offers a programmatic sample of their work.
In this collection of essays theologians debate forgiveness first as a theological concept, looking at Christology and atonement, ecclesiology, the liturgical mediation of forgiveness and the relationship between divine and human forgiving. Forgiveness is also considered in relation to shame, sin and guilt. Then forgiveness is discussed and applied to practical contemporary situations, as the contributors engage with the secular disciplines on the subject. There are specific situations in both the public and private spheres where forgiveness is both urgent and problematic, for example, in South Africa and Northern Ireland, and in the context of child abuse.
The essays in this collection, which examine the philosophies of Charles Hartshorne and A.N. Whitehead, represent the author's journey over the years to achieve a greater understanding of certain aspects of the Christian religion by making use of their metaphysical systems. Among the topics discussed are: reason and faith, concepts of God, the problem of evil, the doctrine of immortality, religion and science, religion in life, and philosophy and literature. Also included in this volume is the primary bibliography of Hartshorne's philosophical works.
