Tracing emotions across work, leisure, social media, and politics,
Practical Feelings counters old myths and shows how emotions are
practical resources for tackling individual and collective
challenges. We do not usually think of our emotions as practical -
often they are nuisances to overcome, momentary mysteries to solve,
or fleeting sensations to savor before getting back to the business
of living. But emotions interlace the practical elements of daily
life. In Practical Feelings, Marci D. Cottingham develops a theory
of emotion as practical resources. By integrating the sociology of
emotion with practice theory, Cottingham covers diverse areas of
social life to show the range of an emotion practice approach and
trace how emotions are put to use in divergent domains. Spanning
work, leisure, digital interactions, and the political sphere,
Cottingham portrays nurses, sports fans, social media users, and
political actors in more complex, holistic ways. Practical Feelings
provides the conceptual tools needed to examine emotions as effort,
energy, and embodied resources that calibrate us to the social
world.
Sometimes the truth doesn't set you free—it gets you killed.
Detective Susan Ford notices a missed call on her phone from a
number she doesn't recognize, and when Madison Garcia, a woman with
past ties to the town of Monticello, New York, is found stabbed to
death the next morning, Susan realizes that Madison was the one who
had called her. But why? Susan teams up with her father, retired
Detective Will Ford, to find the killer, and their investigation
soon threatens to uncover Madison's family secrets—an
inheritance, accidental death, money laundering, extramarital
affairs, and family rivalries, just to name a few—and they don't
appreciate the Fords digging into their business. As the
investigation twists and turns, the Fords discover that Madison was
planning to confess to a long-kept secret, but someone brutally
silenced her. Everyone she knew is a suspect. Anyone could be her
killer.
An instant "New York Times" bestseller, this powerful book from
transformational expert Marci Shimoff, now in paperback, shows
readers how to live happier and more open-hearted lives by
experiencing more unconditional love.
In "Love for No Reason" Marci Shimoff guides readers towards a life
filled with love--the kind of love that doesn't depend on another
person, situation, or romantic partner.
"Love for No Reason" introduces a new way of thinking about love,
defining it as an inner state of being that anyone can access at
any time, and in any circumstance. To experience what Shimoff calls
"Love for No Reason," one doesn't need to have the right partner,
the perfect body, an ideal child, or a great job. As the book
demonstrates through the examples of those who are living in this
state of unconditional love, when you love for no reason you bring
love to the world around you, rather than expect love from it.
Supported by the latest scientific research on the biochemistry of
love, Shimoff outlines a revolutionary program to develop and
nurture more love from the inside out. She also offers practical
tools and breakthrough methods that will empower readers to bring
unconditional love to every aspect of their lives and introduces
150 Love Luminaries--world-renowned scientists, spiritual leaders,
and psychologists, as well as people who are living in the state of
Love for No Reason--many of whom share their moving personal
stories.
Regardless of the challenges people may face--whether they are
relationship, economic, or business pressures--this book will show
readers how they can become an unshakeable source of love for
themselves and everyone around them.

Public reading programs are flourishing in many Latin American
cities in the new millennium. They defy the conception of reading
as solitary and private by literally taking literature to the
streets to create new communities of readers. From institutional
and official to informal and spontaneous, the reading programs all
use public space, distribute creative writing to a mass public,
foster collective rather than individual reading, and provide
access to literature in unconventional arenas. The first
international study of contemporary print culture in the Americas,
Public Pages reveals how recent cultural policy and collective
literary reading intervene in public space to promote social
integration in cities in Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and
Chile. Marcy Schwartz looks at broad institutional programs such as
UNESCO World Book Capital campaigns and the distribution of free
books on public transportation, as well as local initiatives that
produce handmade books out of recycled materials (known as
cartoneras) and display banned books at former military detention
centers. She maps the connection between literary reading and the
development of cultural citizenship in Latin America, with
municipalities, cultural centers, and groups of ordinary citizens
harnessing reading as an activity both social and literary. Along
with other strategies for reclaiming democracy after decades of
authoritarian regimes and political violence, as well as responding
to neoliberal economic policies, these acts of reading collectively
in public settings invite civic participation and affirm local
belonging.
