Toxic Leaders - When Organizations Go Bad (Hardcover): Marcia L Whicker Toxic Leaders - When Organizations Go Bad (Hardcover)
Marcia L Whicker
R2,443 Discovery Miles 24 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on her extensive experience and research in various types of organizations-business, political, even religious organizations-Dr. Whicker looks closely at three distinct types of leaders which she categorizes as trustworthy, transitional, and toxic leaders. In a clear and readable style she describes leadership subtypes for transitional and toxic types: the absentee leaders, the busybodies, controllers, enforcers, streetfighters, and the bullies, all of whom are dangerous to their organizations and are directly responsible in many cases for an organization's decline. Whicker makes clear, however, that there are ways to protect oneself from such leaders, and shows exactly what these strategies are. A compelling, anecdotal, authoritative analysis for anyone in any organization who has ever wondered why did the boss do that - and why to "me"?

As Dr. Whicker sees it, "trustworthy leaders" are good, moral, green light leaders. They can trusted to put the goals of the organization and the well-being of their followers first. Organizations with trustworthy leaders at the helm have a green light to advance in productivity, growth, and progress. Three types of trustworthy leaders are consensus builders, team leaders, and commanders. "Transitional leaders" are self-absorbed, egotistical, yellow light leaders. They are focused on the approval of others and concerned with their personal role as leaders. Organizations headed by transitional leaders have a cautionary yellow light to growth, and lurch along at the mercy of the ebb and flow of external currents and trends. Three types of transitional leaders are absentee leaders, busybodies, and controllers. "Toxic leaders" are maladjusted, malcontent, and often malevolent and malicious. They succeed by tearing others down. They glory in turf protection, fighting, and controlling others rather than uplifting followers. They are red light leaders who destroy productivity and apply brakes to organizational progress. They have a deep-seated but well-disguised sense of personal inadequacy, selfish values, and cleverness at concealing deceit. Three types of toxic leaders are enforcers, streetfighters, and bullies. This book gives the reader strategies for surviving transitional and toxic leaders and for restoring organizational health.

Public Sector Management (Hardcover, New): Todd W. Areson, Marcia L Whicker Public Sector Management (Hardcover, New)
Todd W. Areson, Marcia L Whicker
R2,711 Discovery Miles 27 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Intended as a text for master's level students in public administration and public policy, this volume provides an introductory survey of the field that focuses on the structures of operation, management, and environments of modern governments. The contributors address federal, state, and local governments as well as intergovernmental relations, discussing such topics as fiscal management, policy analysis, program evaluation, management and administration, marketing, and the developmental progress of national governments. Their aim throughout is to distill for the reader a solid base of current knowledge about the field of public administration and the challenges it offers to practitioners as we move into the 1990s.

The volume begins with an introductory chapter which addresses current and evolving issues in U.S. public administration and demonstrates the ways in which political, social, and economic trends impact upon modern governments and their managers. The functions and structure of the federal bureaucracy and state and local governments are described in detail in two chapters, followed by a chapter by editor Marcia Whicker that explores intergovernmental relations. The contributors then turn to an examination of government operations in the fiscal management, policy analysis, and program evaluation arenas. Three chapters discuss management issues, including organizational theory, leadership, and personnel administration. Finally, the text addresses the use and adaptation of private sector marketing techniques, the developmental progress of national governments, and the evolution of historical/philosophical values that constitute the framework for future governance.

The Presidency and the Persian Gulf War (Hardcover, New): Raymond Moore, James Pfiffner, Marcia L Whicker The Presidency and the Persian Gulf War (Hardcover, New)
Raymond Moore, James Pfiffner, Marcia L Whicker
R2,710 Discovery Miles 27 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book focuses on policy-making at the highest levels of the United States government. Chapter contributors examine political, military, and foreign policy processes from micro and macro perspectives in documenting how President Bush personally dominated U.S. national security policy and was the driving force behind the United Nations-backed coalition of nations against Saddam Hussein. The authors place the president's actions into political and historical perspective and examine the consequences of the Gulf War in both military and diplomatic terms. Among the subjects discussed by experts are the president's political and constitutional roles in war-making; the foreign policy implications and military issues in the war; the domestic implications; and the postwar environment and planning for peace.

Making America Competitive - Policies for a Global Future (Hardcover): Raymond Moore, Marcia L Whicker Making America Competitive - Policies for a Global Future (Hardcover)
Raymond Moore, Marcia L Whicker
R2,691 Discovery Miles 26 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this groundbreaking new study, Whicker and Moore address an issue of critical importance to the future economic and political stability of the United States: how can this nation become more competitive in international markets. Drawing upon economic theory, political philosophy, and specific policy expertise, the authors organize their work around two principle themes: that just as the role of government in a changing world is evolutionary, policies must evolve to reflect shifting economic realities, and that previously hostile attitudes among U.S. management, labor, and government must be replaced by cooperation in order to ensure effective, long-term competitiveness abroad.

Jennie Jacobs Kronenfeld, Marcia L Whicker
R2,686 Discovery Miles 26 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

President Bush's 1000 points of light, with its deemphasis on federal services, serves to flame this decades' debate over the effectiveness of public versus private services. Does the private sector provide better services more efficiently than the public sector? "Captive PopulationS" examines this debate by comparing for-profit, nonprofit, and government service delivery for dependent populations. Focus is placed on services for captive groups: education and child-care, health-care systems, criminal justice services, and long-term care for the elderly. Kronenfeld and Whicker have directed themselves to scholars and practitioners in public health, health administration, public policy, public administration, gerontology, criminal justice, social work, and education. They review service delivery issues and provide a broad comparative perspective.

"Captive PopulationS" focuses on services for the young, the incarcerated, the sick, and the elderly. Kronenfeld and Whicker thoroughly explore the advantages and disadvantages of public versus nonprofit and private service delivery for each of these dependent populations. They then summarize the similarities and differences across the four service and captive population areas. They discuss implications of the growth of for-profit care in the United States and conclude with recommendations.

R2,693 Discovery Miles 26 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Here is a comprehensive account of the U.S. constitution--including its evolution and its impact on shaping American government and political representation. In eight fact-filled chapters, the authors carefully explore the U.S. Constitution's role. Chapter 1 looks at various conflicts which occurred during its ratification in 1787. The next chapter examines both the initial and subsequent impacts of liberalism and capitalism on the Constitution. The following chapters discuss the growth of federal power and the role of the courts in interpreting the Constitution. Chapter five divides Constitutional amendments into those which expand individual liberties versus those which alter the structure of government, places them in historical perspective, and traces amendments through the process of passage. The following chapters analyze the geographic basis for representation established in the Constitutional change and suggests some nontraditional changes.
