Few anthropologists today realize the pioneering role Margaret Mead played in the investigation of contemporary cultures. This volume collects and presents a variety of her essays on research methodology relating to contemporary culture. Many of these essays were printed originally in limited circulation journals, research reports and books edited by others. The United States on the eve of the Second World War was still a society largely isolated from the world. Facing enemies with unfamiliar cultural traditions, the U.S. government turned to anthropologists for insight. The result was a research effort that continued long after the war, aimed, in the words of Margaret Mead, at analyzing the cultural regularities in the characters of individuals who are members of societies that are inaccessible to direct observation. In 1953, Margaret Mead and Rhoda Metraux produced The Study of Culture at a Distance, a compilation of research from this period. This remarkable work, long unavailable, presents a rich and complex methodology for the study of cultures through literature, film, informant interviews, focus groups, and projective techniques. "Margaret Mead" (1901u1978) was associated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York for over 50 years. Her early work on child-rearing and personality resulted in such works as "Coming of Age in Samoa (1928), Growing up in New Guinea (1930), and Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935)." After collaborating with Ruth Benedict in developing the application of anthropology to contemporary cultures, she focused increasingly on processes of culture change, in such works as "New Lives for Old: Cultural Transformation--Manus, 1928-1953 (1956), Culture and Commitment (1970), and Rap on Race" (with James Baldwin, 1971). She taught at Columbia University and the New School for Social Research. "Stephen E. Toulmin" is the Henry R. Luce Professor for the Center for Multiethnic and Transnational Studies at the University of Southern California. His works include "The Inner Life, the Outer Mind; Cosmopolis: The Hidden Agenda of Modernity; and Beyond Theory. "

When, in 1935, Margaret Mead was asked by a member of the
interdisciplinary committee of the Social Science Research Council
to prepare a survey of several cultures for publication, she ended
up creating a model for future ethnological survey texts, as well
as furthering the understanding of cultural relativism in
anthropological studies. The result of her work, "Cooperation and
Competition Among Primitive Peoples," is fascinating. The essays do
not purport to be source materials on the peoples being studied,
but rather have been assembled as "interpretative" statements,
meant to provide a background for planning future research in this
field in our own society.
