This is the history of the black radicals who organised as
Communists between the two imperialist wars of the twentieth
century. It explores the political roots of a dozen organisations
and parties in New York City, Mexico and the Black Caribbean,
including the Anti-Imperialist League, and the American Negro
Labour Congress and the Haiti Patriotic League, and reveals a
history of myriad connections and shared struggle across the
continent. This book reclaims the centrality of class consciousness
and political solidarity amongst these black radicals, who are too
often represented as separate from the international Communist
movement which emerged after the Russian Revolution in 1917.
Instead, it describes the inner workings of the 'Red International'
in relation to struggles against racial and colonial oppression. It
introduces a cast of radical characters including Richard Moore,
Otto Huiswoud, Navares Sager, Grace Campbell, Rose Pastor Stokes
and Wilfred Domingo. Challenging the 'great men' narrative,
Margaret Stevens emphasises the role of women in their capacity as
laborers; the struggles of peasants of colour; and of black workers
in and around Communist parties.
This is the definitive instructional guide to the art of botanical
illustration, published in association with The Society of
Botanical Artists and featuring detailed step-by-step
demonstrations by members of the Society. Botanical illustration
has been a popular art form for many centuries, with its appealing
traditions of detail and beauty. This beautifully illustrated book
covers all aspects of the subject and is an essential book for all
serious students of botanical painting. The book includes useful
information about materials, basic plant anatomy, flower and leaf
shapes, and then explores the techniques for drawing and coloured
pencil work, as well as painting with watercolour and gouache.
Subjects include exotic and common plants, flowers, fruit and
vegetables, as well as flowers in the garden. Packed with
step-by-step demonstrations and stunning illustrations, this is an
inspiring, practical guide, as well as a visual treat.
An illustrated, comprehensive guide to botanical painting written
by the Society of Botanical Artists. In this new book the Society
of Botanical Artists provides a comprehensive guide to the
different styles and methods of botanical painting, harvesting the
talent of both Members and Distance Learning Diploma Course
students around the world, past and present. Botanical Painting
features techniques and materials for all levels and demonstrates
how these skills can be used to develop your own expertise. There
are chapters on drawing with graphite and metal point, coloured
pencil, body and watercolour in plant portraiture and illustration
as well as 'The Mixed Bunch'. The inclusion of the historic methods
used for egg tempera and metal point, as well as the technique
required for working on vellum, makes this a valuable source of
advice on subjects not readily available elsewhere. An
inspirational gallery of paintings at the end of the book provides
a guided walk around an SBA exhibition. The book is beautifully
illustrated throughout, with comprehensive critiques on the
artworks and step-by-step demonstrations. It will be an invaluable
and inspirational addition to the library of the more experienced
botanical painter.

Gifted children are quick on the uptake, can be frustrated by
repetition and easily become impatient when unchallenged.
Challenging the Gifted Child outlines a tried and tested approach
for encouraging able children to focus their active minds in a
productive way and discover the joy and value of reading. The
author explains the criteria for choosing appropriate reading for
the child and describes ways to help deepen their understanding of
both literature and language. Using examples from the author's
extensive experience, this book encourages the development of
independent learning skills and will help parents and educators to
create a personalized reading programme for a gifted child at home
or small groups of children in school. Photocopiable materials are
included, along with samples of reading lists for different age
groups. This book provides practical advice for working with
advanced young readers and will be an ideal resource for anyone who
has responsibility for educating a gifted child.
