First published in her pioneering treatise Statecraft, the opinions and projections of the former Prime Minister on Europe remain potent and resoundingly prophetic. Margaret Thatcher foresaw the European Union as a swelling superstate, gradually eroding Britain's freedom. Irreparable and doomed, European integration did not allow for the birthright of nationhood. It was the most recent incarnation of an idea that has been tried many times before, and the outcomes were far from happy. "During my lifetime," she says, "most of the problems the world has faced have come, in one fashion or other, from mainland Europe, and the solutions from outside it."
Margaret Thatcher is the towering political figure of late-twentieth-century Great Britain. No other prime minister in modern times sought to change the British nation and its place in the world as radically as she did. Published in a single volume for the first time, Margaret Thatcher is the story of her remarkable life told in her own words - the definitive account of an extraordinary woman and consummate politician, bringing together her bestselling memoirs The Downing Street Years and The Path to Power. Writing candidly about her upbringing and early years and the formation of her character and values, she details the experiences that propelled her to the very top in a man's world. She offers a riveting firsthand history of the major events, the crises and triumphs, during her eleven years as prime minister, including the Falklands War, the Brighton hotel bombing, the Westland affair, the final years of the Cold War, and her unprecedented three election victories. Thatcher's judgments of the men and women she encountered during her time in power-from statesmen, premiers, and presidents to Cabinet colleagues-are astonishingly frank, and she recalls her dramatic final days in office with a gripping, hour-by-hour description from inside 10 Downing Street. Powerful, candid, and compelling, Margaret Thatcher stands as a testament to a great leader's significant legacy.

An anthology of skeptical viewpoints of European integration has long been missing. Yet the need for students to have a spectrum of opinion on the EU has never been greater. This reader provides a timely corrective as the euro has plunged in value during its early existence and the Danes have voted against joining up. Exploring underreported and often mischaracterized 'Euro-skeptic' arguments over the goals and methods of European integration, this collection brings together 'Euro-skeptic,' 'Euro-pessimistic,' and 'Euro-phobic' speeches, essays, and other documents (some for the first time in English translation) that illustrate the range of opposition to the European Union. Balancing against the integrationist goal of federalism, the book gives a full airing to the various arguments against 'ever-closer union.' The reader offers classic statements of the 'Europe of the Nations' views of Charles de Gaulle and Margaret Thatcher, as well as the current French 'sovereignists' such as Charles Pasqua and Jean-Pierre Chev_nement and includes more recent British arguments by Michael Portillo and Noel Malcolm. There are interviews with and analyses of far-right or 'national-right' movements and their leaders-Jsrg Haider and the Austrian Freedom party and Jean-Marie Le Pen and the French National Front. The special case of Norway-the only country that has said 'no' (twice) to EU membership-is analyzed by a Norwegian scholar, and two historians argue that European integration overall is in some sense a great illusion or a misguided 'division of the West.'
This book is the first to describe the development of scientific activity in the Antarctic (as distinct from exploration) in all its aspects. Coverage spans three centuries, starting with Halley who laid the foundations of geophysics which was to be the principal driving force behind Antarctic science for most of its history. Although early researchers built up a picture of the main features of the Antarctic environment, the idea of science specific to the continent emerged only later. As the main disciplines of oceanography, earth sciences, the sciences of atmosphere and geospace, terrestrial biology, medicine, and conservation developed, the clear interactions between them within an Antarctic context led to the emergence of the holistic view of Antarctic science which we hold today. For anyone with an interest in the history, conservation or politics of this special part of the world, or in the history of the development of science, this book will provide a mine of information and will act as a rich source of reference for many years to come.
Before George Bush and Tony Blair, there was Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. Together they embodied the trans-Atlantic "special relationship" and faced head-on the threat of global communism. In her eulogy for Reagan, Thatcher famously said, "We have lost a great president, a great American, and a great man. And I have lost a dear friend." Thatcher was a formidable and largely self-trained orator and this volume collects her greatest and most famous speeches, as well as the cream of her interviews, alongside other biographical material. To mark the twentieth anniversary of Thatcher leaving power, Dialogue is also releasing a three-hour CD of her greatest speeches, unabridged.
