Sooner or later everyone who ventures out on the water will encounter strong winds and confused seas, fog, thunderstorms, or heavy rain. This book acquaints boaters with the forces that shape weather, allowing them to predict what changes can be expected. Part I presents a logical explanation of climate and weather, concentrating on those aspects that affect the mariner the most - wind speed and direction, low visibility, thunderstorms, gales, and hurricanes. Part II, which can be read independently, deals with the effects of climate and weather on all types and sizes of boats, without delving into the whys and wherefores - a practical approach for those who want only the necessary facts, illustrated with over 50 images, maps, and diagrams. This book is a valuable tool for everyone who enjoys being on the water.

As one of the few groups in the Greco-Roman world to resist cultural assimilation, the Jews remained an object of fascination throughout antiquity. Greek and Roman writers devoted much space to them, but few bothered to learn the facts about Jews, preferring to report stereotypes and rumor. Evidence does exist, however, to show what real Jews were like in antiquity and how they interacted with the Greeks and Romans, both pagan and Christian. In "The Jews among the Greeks and Romans," Margaret Williams assembles, assesses, and contextualizes literary and archaeological evidence relating to Jewish communities outside the land of Israel. The sourcebook covers the period beginning with the Diaspora that resulted from the chaos of Alexander the Great's death in 323 BCE and concluding with the demise of the Jewish Patriarchate around 420 CE. This was a time which saw, first, the rapid opening up of opportunities for Jews and then, in the century after Constantine, the gradual but inexorable raising of barriers against them. Newly translated from the Greek and Latin, the documents cover a broad array of topics, including religion, customs, festivals, repression, citizenship, military service, economics, intermarriage, and conversion from Jew to Gentile and Gentile to Jew. While previous collections have concentrated on literary texts, the present volume gives prominence to papyrological and epigraphic source material. Composed in accordance with Greco-Roman epigraphic conventions but written by Jews, these texts--some only recently discovered--constitute an extraordinarily rich source of information about the values and practices of Jews in antiquity.
Literacy Skills for the Mass Media provides students with tools and information to better understand words, grammar, spelling, and communication. The text helps students connect the dots between strategies and concepts that foster effective communication practices in both writing and speaking. The text is divided into three sections. Section I introduces students to the basics of grammar, including types of words and their proper usage, the parts of a sentence and effective sentence structure, and how to effectively use punctuation. Section II focuses on sentence construction, providing readers with rules, tips, and strategies for creating dynamic sentences. The final section examines words, speaking to why word choice matters, how to use plurals, possessives, and contractions, common mistakes and issues, the importance of correct spelling, and more. An easy-to-use guide to good grammar and successful communication, Literacy Skills for the Mass Media is an ideal textbook for foundational courses in writing, composition, mass media, and journalism. It is also a useful tool for remedial learning and for reference purposes. The book is an excellent resource for college orientation and student success programs as well.
This is the story of a woman's conflict of interests between technology and children and how she resolved it. Four years of work in Chicago started things. Twenty years raising seven children intervened. Finally twenty years of work at Los Alamos ended it, with retirement in Las Cruces, NM. Most of this covered sixty years of marriage to one man.

Self-concept is broadly defined as a persons perceptions of himself or herself. Self-concept is one of the most extensively researched constructs in educational psychology. This book provides new research, perceptions, cultural influences and gender differences of self-concept. Chapter One discusses a process called fusion which states that various constructs may be perceived to be more or less integrated within the self-concept. Chapter Two focuses on academic self-concept and its correlation to academic achievement. Chapter Three analyses the different relationships among self-beliefs, metacognition and mathematics achievement in Japan, mainland China, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States. Chapter Four derives a structural model for the multidimensional self-concept construct. Chapter Five examines how a belief system of a Chinese student, who is a learner of Japanese as a foreign language, impacts on his self-concept as a foreign language learner. Chapter Six assesses how sport and exercise psychology textbook authors portray disability to readers.
