Fast-paced action movie starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Mickey
Rourke. The Courier (Morgan) has earned his nickname through a
remarkable ability to track down individuals and deliver messages
and packages. The Courier is particularly prized, in certain
circles, for his refusal to ask questions or query the legality of
the material he carries. However, when he is handed a package by a
branch of the Russian mafia and asked to deliver it to an
especially notorious underworld figure, The Courier's skills will
be tested to the limit. He believes he has made a breakthrough when
he gets in contact with Maxwell (Mickey Rourke), a former associate
of the elusive figure he is seeking, but how far can Maxwell be
trusted?
The foremost collection of essays from one of Britain's most
important 20th century Marxist writers Considered by many to be the
most innovative British Marxist writer of the twentieth century,
Christopher Caudwell was killed in the Spanish Civil War at the age
of 29. Although already a published writer of aeronautic texts and
crime fiction, he was practically unknown to the public until
reviews appeared of Illusion and Reality: A Study of the Sources of
Poetry, which was published just after his death. A strikingly
original study of poetry's role, it explained in clear language how
the organizing of emotion in society plays a part in social change
and development. Caudwell had a powerful interest in how things
worked - aeronautics, physics, human psychology, language, and
society. In the anti-fascist struggles of the 1930s he saw that
capitalism was a system that could not work properly and distorted
the thinking of the age. Self-educated from the age of 15, he wrote
with a directness that is alien to most cultural theory. Culture as
Politics introduces Caudwell's work through his most accessible and
relevant writing. Material will be drawn from Illusion and Reality,
Studies in a Dying Culture and his essay, "Heredity and
Development."
This study explores the model derived from Freudian and Lacanian
psychoanalysis, via Marxism and semiotics, of looking at film. It
retraces the steps of film theory from ideological criticism of the
late '60s to spectator studies in 1988 when the book was originally
published. Psychoanalysis enables a discussion of the cinema's role
as a social and political force and this book enters a discourse of
the politics of representation. Reconstructing discussion of basic
issues, the book addresses our instincts and defences in reacting
to cinema, the similarity between mental processes and cinematic
technique, narrative techniques and the 'cinematic apparatus'.
Importantly, the book concerns itself with the concept of ideology
and how the filmviewing experience engages the spectator in a
complex net of stimuli presenting representations of an ideal world
and the effect of this within film studies.
What is the relationship between the social performance of
companies and their financial performance? More colloquially, can a
firm effectively attend to both people and profits as it conducts
its business? This question has been investigated in no fewer than
95 empirical studies published since 1972. The authors have
assembled a compendium of this research to give researchers and
practitioners alike a broad overview of these 95 studies and a
systematic database detailing the content of each one. This book
provides a comprehensive portrait of this research literature. It
begins with a broad orientation to the literature, exploring why
the link between social and financial performance has been subject
to continual inquiry and often heated debate. The authors then
present an integrated overview of the 95 studies. Through the
charts and tables, the authors illuminate the nature of the studies
conducted; the data samples selected for investigation; the ways in
which financial and social performance have been measured; and the
overall tally of results.
Jefferson County, New York, has one of the richest concentrations
of stone houses in America. As many as 500 limestone houses,
churches, and commercial buildings were built there before 1860.
Some of the buildings are beautiful mansions built by early
entrepreneurs, and others are small vernacular farmhouses. Some are
clustered together; others dot the countryside near limestone
outcroppings. Embedded in the fabric of each building are the
stories of its location, its maker, and those who have lived there.
Lavishly illustrated with almost 300 photographs, this volume
highlights eighty-five stone houses in the region. The editors
explore both the beauty and permanence of the stonework and the
courage and ambition of the early dwellers. They detail the ways in
which skilled masons utilized local limestone and sandstone,
crafting double-faced stone walls to protect against fire and harsh
winters. The book includes detailed discussions of the geology of
the region, the stone buildings that have been lost, and the
preservation and care of existing structures. Stone Houses of
Jefferson County provides a fascinating look at the intrinsic
beauty of these buildings and the historical links they provide to
our early settlement.

Questions of legal extraterritoriality figure prominently in
scholarship on legal pluralism, transnational legal studies,
international investment law, international human rights law, state
responsibility under international law, and a large number of other
areas. Yet many accounts of extraterritoriality make little effort
to grapple with its thorny conceptual history, shifting theoretical
valence, and complex political roots and ramifications. This book
brings together thirteen scholars of law, history, and politics in
order to reconsider the history, theory, and contemporary relevance
of legal extraterritoriality. Situating questions of
extraterritoriality in a set of broader investigations into
state-building, imperialist rivalry, capitalist expansion, and
human rights protection, it tracks the multiple meanings and
functions of a distinct and far-reaching mode of legal authority.
The fundamental aim of the volume is to examine the different
geographical contexts in which extraterritorial regimes have
developed, the political and economic pressures in response to
which such regimes have grown, the highly uneven distributions of
extraterritorial privilege that have resulted from these processes,
and the complex theoretical quandaries to which this type of
privilege has given rise. The book will be of considerable interest
to scholars in law, history, political science, socio-legal
studies, international relations, and legal geography.
The first book to address timing considerations in testing and
assessment. Offers actionable strategies built from cutting-edge
research made possible through advances in technology-based
assessments. The comprehensive approach of this book, including
both theoretical and practical information, will position it as the
definitive resource on the subject within the market.

Terry Karger is the one living person who intimately knew Marilyn
Monroe and Ronald Reagan. "Looks will get you far, but not as far
as a good education." -Marilyn Monroe to Terry Karger Terry Karger
is a child of Hollywood: the granddaughter of Metro Pictures
cofounder Maxwell Karger, and the daughter of Fred Karger, a vocal
coach at Columbia Pictures. Terry's story revolves around Fred and
a trio of silver-screen legends: her stepmother Jane Wyman, Ronald
Reagan, and, primarily, Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn, recently evolved
from Norma Jeane Mortenson, was an unknown starlet when, as a
twenty-one-year-old, she first met six-year-old Terry-and began
dating her dad-in the spring of 1948. The orphaned, emotionally
fragile actress initially babysat Fred's daughter while turning to
his family for support. Although the Marilyn-Fred romance lasted
just over a year, her close friendship with the Kargers, including
Fred, continued for fourteen years until the end of Marilyn's life.
While Fred was Marilyn's first true love, his mom, Nana, was the
mother she never really had. "Maril," as they fondly called her,
was allowed to relax and be herself. It also enabled Marilyn to
appease her own unfulfilled maternal instincts, acting as a cross
between a sweet, playful big sister and generous, caring surrogate
mom to Terry. This memoir also reveals privately taken, previously
unpublished photos of the iconic superstar with her adopted family
and friends.

Aldus Manutius is perhaps the greatest figure in the history of the
printed book: in Venice, Europe's capital of printing, he invented
the italic type and issued more first editions of the classics than
anyone before or since, as well as Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, the
most beautiful and mysterious printed book of the Italian
Renaissance. This is the first monograph in English on Aldus
Manutius in over forty years. It shows how Aldus redefined the role
of a book printer, from mere manual labourer to learned publisher.
As a consequence Aldus participated in the same debates as
contemporaries such as Leonardo da Vinci and Erasmus of Rotterdam,
making this book an insight into their world too.
