Transnational Solidarity in Times of Crises - Citizen Organisations and Collective Learning in Europe (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Transnational Solidarity in Times of Crises - Citizen Organisations and Collective Learning in Europe (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Christian Lahusen, Ulrike Zschache, Maria Kousis
R1,663 Discovery Miles 16 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access collection is devoted to an in-depth, qualitative analysis of practices of cross-national solidarity in response to the current political and social crises, from citizens' initiatives to networks of cooperation among civil society actors. The book analyses existing informal groups at the grassroots, furthering transnational solidarity in three thematic areas: disability, unemployment and immigration. Contributions assess how civic groups respond to the various crises affecting Europe, especially the economic and refugee crises, presenting new findings from a systematic comparative study conducted in eight European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK). The research will be of interest to scholars, students, journalists, policy-makers and activists interested in civil society, social movements, charitable actions, altruism and solidarity, as well as European studies and the socio-economic challenges of current European crises.

With contributions from the fields of philosophy, anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, geography and linguistics, this book provides a unique resource for students and scholars, but also for policy-makers and social scientists working on migration-related issues within and beyond Europe.

Contested Mediterranean Spaces - Ethnographic Essays in Honour of Charles Tilly (Hardcover, New): Maria Kousis, Tom Selwyn,... Contested Mediterranean Spaces - Ethnographic Essays in Honour of Charles Tilly (Hardcover, New)
Maria Kousis, Tom Selwyn, David Clark
R3,028 Discovery Miles 30 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"It is well known that Charles Tilly left scholars of big structures, large processes, and huge comparisons a tall research agenda. It is less acknowledged that he also left political ethnographers an impressive and provocative set of tools. In the skilled hands of the contributors to this insightful volume, the 'Tilly toolbox' is put to good work in the service of a theory-driven and empirically-grounded exploration of Mediterranean contentious landscapes." . Javier Auyero, University of Texas, Austin; Editor, Qualitative Sociology

"Contested Mediterranean Spaces rescues a cultural geography from the essentialist circularities to which it was once often reduced. These authors examine how circum-Mediterranean identities, at every level from the clan to the nation-state, exhibit the complex impact of ideological and political manipulation. They show how this hothouse of Europe's self-ascribed cultural origins has been characteristically prey to spatial cleansing, gentrification, and bigotry; they also document a regional activism that seeks more tolerant and environmentally benign futures. By problematizing the political and intellectual manipulations as well as the ideological tensions that inform such revivals of the Mediterranean as category and concept, they persuasively refurbish a tired regionalism with refreshing critical and comparative interest." . Michael Herzfeld, Harvard University; Author of Evicted from Eternity: The Restructuring of Rome"

Youth Political Participation in Greece: A Multiple Methods Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Stefania Kalogeraki, Maria... Youth Political Participation in Greece: A Multiple Methods Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Stefania Kalogeraki, Maria Kousis
R3,614 Discovery Miles 36 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The overarching aim of this edited volume is to investigate different modes, patterns and determinants of youth political participation in Greece, since the economic crisis, by incorporating a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. The chapters examine different forms of youth political participation, from institutionalized (such as voting, or membership in political parties) to non-institutionalized (such as signing petitions, protesting through demonstrations or occupations, and political consumerism). Moreover, the chapters shed light on diverse aspects of youth political participation, such as the interlinkages between occupational precarity and political behaviour, the spatial portrait of youth political engagement in rural, suburban and urban Greek contexts, the engendered aspects of political involvement, the pivotal role of protest events in youth political socialization and in mobilization in contentious political actions, the different impacts of priming inequality on youth's political beliefs, depending on different modes of thinking, as well as the key features of youth-related and youth-led (non-state) organisations operating in Greece. The aforementioned aspects are examined at the micro, meso or/and macro level through distinct methodological approaches including panel survey, experimental survey, biographical interviews, in-depth interviews and action organization analysis, carried out in the context of the EURYKA (European Commission) project.

Economic and Political Contention in Comparative Perspective (Paperback): Maria Kousis, Charles Tilly Economic and Political Contention in Comparative Perspective (Paperback)
Maria Kousis, Charles Tilly
R1,972 Discovery Miles 19 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

European and American specialists in economic and political processes move beyond earlier debates to look seriously, systematically, and innovatively at social change and protest, with particular attention to the influence of economic change and variation on contentious politics. The essays take up two widely recognized but much contested questions in contentious politics: how threats and opportunities faced by potential participants in joint political action affect the likelihood, character, and consequences of that action; and, how economic change and variation either a) constitute significant political threats and opportunities or b) shape responses to political threats and opportunities. Contributors: Maria Kousis, Charles Tilly, Marc Giugni, Julie Berclaz, Marc Steinberg, Jeffery Broadbent, Klaus Eder, John K. Glenn, Dieter Rucht, Richard Hogan, Maryjane Osa, Cristina Corduneanu-Husi.

R4,054 Discovery Miles 40 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The past few years have seen an unexpected resurgence of street-level protest movements around the world, from the uprisings of the Arab Spring to the rise of the anti-austerity Indignados in Spain and Greece to the global spread of the Occupy movement. This collection is designed to offer a comparative analysis of these movements, setting them in international, socio-economic, and cross-cultural perspective in order to help us understand why movements emerge, what they do, how they spread, and how they fit into both local and worldwide historical contexts. As the most significant wave of mass protests in decades continues apace, this book offers an authoritative analysis that could not be more timely.
