The classic fairy tales compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm, the Brothers
Grimm (1812) are stories of dark wisdom with a bite. Not for the
faint-hearted, not for the weak of spirit, not for anyone expecting
childish fluff. Contained within these pages are fairy tales that
show the dark beauty of truth, and the cold mirror of common sense,
clad in the rich glamour of the imagination.
Translated (1823) from the German by Edgar Taylor and Marian
Edwardes.

Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859), were born near
Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse. Both law students at
Marburg University, They are best remembered for their collection
of German folk tales gleaned from oral sources and first published
as 'Nursery and Household Tales' in 1814. Intended to preserve
German folklore, the stories were translated into English by Edgar
Taylor and soon became a staple of children's literature. Since
entering the public domain the stories have provided a rich
breeding ground for continuing creative efforts by Walt Disney and
others. Included in this collection are over sixty stories from the
the Grimms' Kinder und Hausmarchen, as translated by Edgar Taylor
and Marian Edwardes.
Several mythologies are concentrated upon within this volume, which
embraces the great imaginations and divine beliefs of the races of
the East, North and extreme West. The compilers have striven to

preparing this work. This is a great reference work for any admirer
of mythology and includes a complete list of chief authorities used
within.
