Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859), were born near
Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse. Both law students at
Marburg University, They are best remembered for their collection
of German folk tales gleaned from oral sources and first published
as 'Nursery and Household Tales' in 1814. Intended to preserve
German folklore, the stories were translated into English by Edgar
Taylor and soon became a staple of children's literature. Since
entering the public domain the stories have provided a rich
breeding ground for continuing creative efforts by Walt Disney and
others. Included in this collection are over sixty stories from the
the Grimms' Kinder und Hausmarchen, as translated by Edgar Taylor
and Marian Edwardes.
