Alfred Hitchcock directed this adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier novel - his last British film - before leaving for Hollywood and a contract with David O. Selznick. Young orphan Mary (Maureen O'Hara) arrives in 18th century Cornwall to live with her Uncle Joss (Leslie Banks), the landlord of Jamaica Inn. After finding work as a barmaid, Mary discovers that Joss commands a band of pirates who smuggle contraband from wrecked ships. Mary is further unnerved by the ever-present Justice of the Peace, Sir Humphrey Pengallan (Charles Laughton).
This book will entertain youngsters with its fanciful tales of talking raccoons, a pet fawn, a goat that's always in trouble, flowers from heaven and a frog named Freddy. There are also a cheerful water sprite named Pixie and the knight who won a surprising battle. If, among the pages, a life lesson is learned, that's okay. For beginning readers as well as sophisticated pre-teens, the book will be a delight to read, with prose that flows with its own rhythm and simple but well-constructed language. Little ones will love to have the stories read to them, again and again. Two of the stories have been read to grade school classes, and they loved them. You will love them all.
Adventure drama about a man who travels to post-colonial Africa to visit his brother, only to find he has been killed by a Kenyan rebel group. When Alan Howard (Dirk Bogarde) arrives in Africa, he soon learns his brother has been killed by the Mau Mau, a group of rebels who are fighting against the newly imposed rule of the white man. Enraged by his brother's murder, Alan decides to stay and put all his energy into fighting the Mau Mau, who he now considers his enemy. However, along the way he falls in love with a neighbouring settler called Mary (Virginia McKenna), who disagrees with his abhorrence of the native people, and tries to put an end to his prejudices.
Oscar-winning thriller from the Boulting Brothers. When a scientist, Professor Willingdon (Barry Jones), sends a letter to 10 Downing Street threatening to blow up the Houses of Parliament within a week unless the Prime Minister agrees to his demands, it is dismissed as a hoax. But when Willingdon disappears, alarm bells start to ring, and soon the whole of London is out looking for him.
