Finally, 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012), the final film in Nolan's Batman trilogy, set eight years on from the events of 'The Dark Knight', sees Batman returning to save Gotham City from the evil clutches of brutal terrorist Bane (Tom Hardy) and his enigmatic sidekick, Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway). However, Batman's ability to act as an avenging angel is curtailed by the fact that he is now on Gotham City Police Department's Most Wanted list, having assumed responsibility for the crimes of deceased District Attorney Harvey Dent.

When criminal Chris (Owen) is released on good behaviour after serving several years in prison for murder, his brother Frank (Crudup), a promising young policeman, apprehensively meets him at the gate. Agreeing to help him back to a life of normality, Frank sorts out his brother with a job, a home and even helps him get in contact with his children and estranged ex-wife. After all his help Chris refuses to change and falls back into a life of crime, much to the dismay of his caring brother and father (James Caan).

Meanwhile, he must also juggle the various colourful women in his life: his wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), his mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz), his muse Claudia (Nicole Kidman), his producer Liliane (Judi Dench), his mother (Sophia Loren) and even a prostitute who resurfaces from the depths of his past (Stacy Ferguson). Kate Hudson co-stars as the American journalist who interviews him about his life and work.

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star in this adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy. After three witches foretell that Scottish nobleman Macbeth (Fassbender) will be king he becomes obssessed by the idea. Encouraged by his wife Lady Macbeth (Cotillard), his ambition becomes all-consuming and he kills the reigning monarch, King Duncan (David Thewlis). But Macbeth becomes a tyrannical ruler, filled with anxiety over who he can trust... The cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Harris, Paddy Considine and David Hayman.

Jacques Audiard directs this French relationship drama detailing the bond that develops between two people, both profoundly damaged in different ways. The film starts by telling two parallel stories: one of Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts), a homeless father struggling to care for his five-year-old son, and the other of Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), a woman who loses her legs in an accident while working as a trainer of killer whales. Both strong, idiosyncratic characters who are used to defining the parameters of their personal relationships, their union forces them out of the emotional safety zones they have each developed for the purposes of self-protection.
