Religion and Secularity traces the history of the conceptual binary of religion and secularity in Europe and the repercussions it had in other regions and cultures of the Eurasian continent during the age of imperialism and beyond. Twelve authors from a wide range of disciplines, deal in their contributions with the trajectory, the concepts of "religion" and "secularity/secularization" took, as well as with the corresponding re-configurations of the religious field in a variety of cultures in Europe, the Near and Middle East, South Asia and East Asia. Taken together, these in-depth studies provide a broad comparative perspective on a penomenon that has been crucial for the development of globalized modernity and its regional interpretations.

Korea, geographically situated at cultural crossroads, has a long history of creative engagement with knowledge from outside sources. This volume discusses processes of knowledge integration - of interpretive adaptation, dissection, selection and re-assemblage, of reduction and amplification, as well as of blending with existing cognitive structures - in pre-modern and early modern times. The articles assembled deal with a wide range of sources (including material objects as carriers of knowledge) and with diverse fields of knowledge, spanning the realms of philosophy, religion, literature, military and technical knowledge, and political thought. Together, they richly illustrate the transformative powers inherent in re-configurations of knowledge.

In response to the recent surge of interest in studying epistemic transfers and changes, this volume assembles an interdisciplinary range of articles that look at the production, consumption and dissemination of knowledge in East Asia, centering on Korea, under the paradigm of knowledge circulation. Applying this heuristic tool offers new perspectives on pre-modern Korea and beyond. It allows for flexibility of scale and thus facilitates the identification of shared processes of appropriation, digestion and re-distribution of ideas, regardless of whether the exchanges take place between states and nations, between social groups, or even between individuals. The articles in this volume stress the spatial and social aspects of the process of knowledge circulation in particular: the role of location and of social networks in the production, evaluation and dissemination of new knowledge.

The book is about the evolution and transformation of knowledge and knowledge systems in the context of cultural contact. The articles take Korea as an example and deal with the configuration, dissemination and consolidation of knowledge in certain contexts of the past and present. Combining philological and social scientific approaches, this book is the result of a joint research project of the Korean Studies institutes at Freie Universitat Berlin and Ruhr University Bochum pursued between 2009 and 2014.

The essay, representing the original form of Chinese prose, emerged as masterly literary genre in the late Middle Ages. Next to the poem, the essay embodied the expression of the Chinese mind. In the course of history, it developed from a moral tool to a manifestation of joie de vivre. A leisurely look at the world is therefore the characteristic trait of the essay - well into modern times.

Die Beitrage dieses Sammelbandes behandeln ausgewahlte Facetten der gemeinsamen Geschichte Deutschlands und Koreas in Geschichte und Politik, Lebensumstanden und Migration sowie Kultur und Lebenswelten. Beide Lander verstehen sich jeweils als das Herzstuck Europas und Ostasiens und feierten im Jahre 2013 das 130. Jubilaum ihrer diplomatischen Beziehungen seit dem ersten offiziellen Vertrag vom 26. November 1883. Trotz ihrer geographischen Lage, geschichtlichen Entwicklung und weltpolitischen Bedingungen, gerade in jungster Zeit, haben Deutschland und Korea bis heute ihre teils recht engen, teils aber auch etwas lockeren Beziehungen aufrechterhalten.

Sowon waren konfuzianische Privatakademien, die sich seit Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts in Korea rasch verbreiteten. Sie waren Orte der Generierung, Weitergabe und Stabilisierung verschiedener Formen von Wissen, aber auch Institutionen mit eigenstandigen Ordnungen, die ihr eigenes Funktionieren wie auch ihr Verstandnis und ihren Umgang mit Wissen regulierten. Die Autorin analysiert, wie und in welcher Form das neokonfuzianische Wissen in den Sowon institutionalisiert und wie dieses institutionalisierte Wissen in der Praxis gehandhabt wurde. Sie untersucht sowohl die Akteure und Prozesse der Institutionalisierung als auch die Formen des Wissenstransfers innerhalb, zwischen und jenseits dieser konfuzianischen Privatakademien.

Das Buch untersucht anhand unterschiedlicher Quellen den Stellenwert bauhandwerklichen Fachwissens in der zentralen Administration der "Choson-Zeit" mit Fokus auf das 17. und 18. Jahrhundert. Hierzu analysiert der Autor zunachst die Beamtenprufungen und ihre Inhalte sowie die Strukturen des staatlichen Bauwesens. Er untersucht auf Basis des Genres der "uigwe" die Projektorganisation bei Bauvorhaben im Rahmen staatlicher Legitimation. Der Autor zeigt die Manifestation des kanonisierten Wissens in den staatlichen Strukturen auf und stellt diesen anschliessend die Kritiken und Vorschlage progressiver Gelehrter, der sogenannten "sirhak", gegenuber. Diese zeugen von privater Wertschatzung von bauhandwerklichem Wissen, aber vergeblichen Veranderungsbemuhungen.
