needs, except apples. So she sets off to market, taking a basket of
plums to trade along the way, just in case... This is a classic
story of sharing, trading and caring. Children will love guessing
what the woman will acquire next, and how, and seeing how her
journey brings her a full circle as her kindness is repaid.
The brilliant graphic memoir of growing up in Iran during and after the
Islamic revolution.
Marjane Satrapi lived through the Iranian Revolution as a little girl.
This is her classic memoir-in-comic-strips, the story of a child
entangled in the history and politics of her country. It paints an
unforgettable portrait of growing up in revolutionary and war-torn
Iran, in a family that was both outrageous and ordinary, beset by
tragedy and yet buffered by love. Funny, wise, ultimately heartbreaking
and told with unforgettable pictures.
Beautifully retold by the award-winning author Beverley Naidoo,
this earliest-known version of Cinderella is brought to life for
the modern-day reader. Rhodopis is a Greek girl who is sold into
slavery by bandits and taken to Egypt. Along the way she becomes
friends with the storyteller Aesop and a host of playful animals.
Her master gives her a pair of beautiful rose-red slippers, making
three other servants jealous. But when Horus, the falcon, sweeps in
to steal her slipper, Rhodopis has little idea that this act will
lead her to the King of Egypt. The first in our 'One Story, Many
Voices' series, this ancient story of Cinderella finds its echo in
fairy tales all over the world.
This is the first monograph devoted to clean ring and matrix
theory. It aims to study a theory of expressing an element in a
ring as the sum of some special ones, such as idempotents, units,
nilpotents, tripotents, involutions, etc. A matrix over such rings
is thereby expressed as the sum of some special matrices. Also
another topics on the behaviors of topological properties and
*-properties of such rings are investigated. The book is based on
the results of various published papers, particularly, by the
authors'. It is accessible for students familiar with general
abstract algebra, while the topics are interesting for researchers
in the field of ring, matrix and operator theory.
This book explores the current policy measures adopted by the EU in
order to realize its Kyoto Protocol commitment and to prepare for
further emission reductions after 2012. EU Climate Change Policy
focuses on legal instruments, with emissions trading at the
forefront of the policy package, accompanied by directives on
energy taxation, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Distinguished authors provide a commentary on each aspect of the
policy measures, discussing both theoretical and practical aspects.
Overall, it is concluded that whilst EU policy is very 'green', it
needs to be developed further in a comprehensive and meaningful
way. With discussions on the current state of affairs of EU climate
change policy, and on the issues that may shape its future agenda,
this book will be of great interest to academics, civil servants,
students and stakeholders.
Formal and Practical Aspects of Domain-Specific Languages: Recent
Developments is a collection of academic works containing current
research on all aspects of domain-specific language. This book is a
comprehensive overview in the computer language field and aims to
be essential for scholars and practitioners in the software
engineering fields by providing new results and answers to open
problems in DSL research.
"Definite" is a decision support software package that improves the
quality of environmental decision making since it: structures the
decision process; makes full use of available information; provides
a rational, responsible and justifiable decision that is open for
external review; and allows the exploration of all the options by
the use of 'what if?' scenarios. "Definite" is, in fact, a whole
toolkit of methods that can be used on a wide variety of problems.
If there is a problem to be solved and alternative solutions can be
identified, then "Definite" can weigh up the alternatives and
assess the most reasonable option. The system contains a number of
methods for supporting problem definition as well as graphical and
other methods to support representation. In the assessment of the
problem, "Definite" can support priority allocation in a number of
ways. "Definite" can deal with all types of alternatives, thanks to
the inclusion of five different multicriteria methods, as well as
cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis. Related procedures
such as weight assessment, standardization, discounting, and a wide
variety of methods for sensitivity analysis are also available.
"Definite" - allowing for fifty alternatives and fifty effects -
supports the whole decision process, from problem definition to
report generation. The structured approach adopted ensures that the
decisions arrived at are systematic and consistent. The full
version of "Definite" comprises: the book, "Multiobjective Decision
Support for Environmental Management"; "The Definite User Manual";
the Definite software package; and a helpdesk for user support.
This thesis addresses karst development in a terrain characterized
by a highly complex geological and geomorphological evolution. It
tackles the extent and complexity of both epigenic and hypogenic
karst development, based on morphological analyses of caves,
combined with analyses and datations of cave sediments and their
correlation to regional geological and geomorphological evolution.
Hypogenic karst registered is mainly the result of hydrothermal
speleogenesis due to increased geothermal gradient in connection
with nearby Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanic centers, with occurrence
of sulfuric acid speleogenesis and ghost-rock weathering due to
local geological or lithological control. Epigenic speleogenesis is
strongly controlled by base level oscillations, with also examples
of deep phreatic (now fossil) caves connected to regional base
level rise, and per-ascensum speleogenesis. Another important
finding is the constraining of the timing of Mariovo Lake draining
in the Pleistocene, an important event in order to understand the
geomorphological evolution in Macedonia, as it led to the onset of
fluvial development and incision of valleys, shaping most of the
present morphology.
The process of globalization can be seen in the increase of: trade
interdependence, the importance of global multinational
corporations, mobility and volatility of capital flows (with
dangers demonstrated by the recent Mexican crisis). This
globalization creates both dangers and new opportunities, both
winners and losers. The parallel growth of regional blocs is
equally hazardous, particularly for countries left outside the
regional blocs. The book, with contributions by eminent experts,
describes the impact of both globalization and regionalization and
the relationship between these two dominant trends.
A universal approach to the ontology of geographic space has
already been, and is going to be, a comprehensive task for
establishing more effective spatial models. The concept of a
universal spatial ontology should be independent of location,
culture, and time. It should be fundamental and universal in the
same way that the number p defines the ratio between the diameter
and the circumference of a circle. The term universal therefore
means all-embracing and for general propose. Universal Ontology of
Geographic Space: Semantic Enrichment for Spatial Data aims to
escalate the current scope of research to support the development
of semantically interoperable systems of geographic space. This
reference will aid university lecturers and professors, students,
researchers, developers of spatial applications.
EU environmental law is now a dominant source of influence in the
development and application of environmental law and policy in most
Member States. This important new study provides a fresh appraisal
of the changing nature of EU environmental legislation, and the
tensions between discretion and goals. Above all it tackles the
difficult questions of the appropriate role and design of law in
tackling current and future environmental challenges. It should be
required reading by all those concerned with the future of
environmental law, both within Europe and elsewhere, and the
authors are to be congratulated on the quality and scope of their
analysis.' - Richard Macrory, University College, London, UKThis
thought-provoking book offers a cross-cutting debate on EU
environmental legislation from a legal perspective focusing on key
themes such as regulatory instrument choice, the coherency of law,
and enforceable commitments. Based on thorough investigations of
several environmental domains - particularly water law, air quality
law, industrial emissions law and climate and energy law - it
presents the current state of EU environmental regulatory
approaches and suggests potential ways for improvement. It pays
close attention to the consequences of EU legislative choices for
Member States and balances the need for clear environmental
legislation providing enforceable substantive rights to citizens
against the wish to leave discretion to Member States. This timely
book provides a critical review of the complexity and inherent
flexibility of EU environmental law. It will have great appeal to
environmental law scholars, political scientists, environmental
policy and law consultants and to Governmental officers both in the
EU and Member States. Contributors: B. Beijen, M. Bogaart, F.

'Written in a clear and straightforward style, and well grounded in
succinct and pertinent analysis...It will prove a boon to students
and practitioners alike as moves proceed towards European
integration.' - British Book News; This volume identifies and
analyses the extent to which the countries of Central and Eastern
Europe are likely to attract inward foreign direct investment (FDI)
to the turn of the century. Although these countries have been
growing recipients of FDI, Western multinationals remain cautious
and are slow to commit large investment sums. The book covers the
contextual and thematic aspects of FDI as well as empirical country
studies (including the Commonwealth of Independent States, Hungary,
Poland and Slovenia) which address the legal environment for FDI,
its magnitude and motives and industrial breakdown. The final
section discusses the potential for closer economic and political
integration in Europe.
The European Union has succeeded in bringing into force an
impressive package of regulatory measures aiming to provide a high
level of environmental protection across the EU. As a result,
scholars, students and practitioners are confronted with the
challenge of gaining insight into this complex legislative
framework and its effects. This wide-ranging Research Handbook
investigates a multitude of substantive issues including waste,
nature conservation, air pollution, water quality protection,
chemical substantives and genetically modified organisms. Based on
contributions developed by 40 environmental law scholars, this
comprehensive Research Handbook discusses how the EU has used its
regulatory power to steer towards environmentally friendly
behaviour, delving into the deep concerns related to the compliance
with and enforcement of EU environmental law. It also highlights
the important role of civil society?s use of environmental
procedural rights, and characterizes how the CJEU case law has
contributed to the effective implementation of EU environmental
legislation. Shedding light on the institutional, horizontal and
sectoral dimensions of EU environmental law, the Research Handbook
on EU Environmental Law will be a key resource for environmental
law scholars both in the EU and worldwide, whilst also being of
value to environmental law practitioners working in EU member
states.
This book offers insights into the legal mechanisms that are
adopted in multilevel constitutional orders to accommodate the
tension between contrasting interests of diversity and unity and
the converging or diverging effects they may have on the
functioning of a multilevel constitutional order. It does so by
targeting mainly the European experience but also drawing insights
from other jurisdictions. The volume draws on a well-rounded
theoretical framework that allows a comprehensive discussion of the
dialectics in multi-level systems.) It focuses on two of the most
relevant areas of constitutional law, namely the setup of
supranational institutions and the protection of fundamental human
rights. Finally, the work presents a fresh legal take on the
unity-diversity dichotomy. This collection is ideal for academics
working in the fields of constitutional law, international law,
federal theory, institutional design, management and accommodation
of diversity, and protection of fundamental rights. Political
scientists will also find the discussions very relevant as a
foundation for further research in their field. Policymakers
involved in constitutional engineering will be interested, as
mechanisms of accommodation, convergence, and divergence are
increasingly looked at as devices for managing multilevel polities.
The book gives detailed discussions of essential EU climate law and
presents profound national reports which cover the transposition of
EU law and focus on national climate strategies, which are often
complex and sometimes also ambitious. Comparative studies at the
grassroots level are an important source of ideas and possibilities
and also useful documentation both for researchers and political
actors.' - Erkki Hollo, University of Helsinki, Finland'This is an
outstanding collection of essays by a multi-national team of
leading scholars. It reminds us that in a system of multi-level
governance, it is crucial to examine and appraise developments not
only at the level of the European Union but also within the Member
States. This task has become easier with the publication of this
excellent book.' - Joanne Scott, University College London, UK The
complex and multifaceted nature of EU climate legislation poses a
major challenge for EU Member States. This timely book focuses on
national climate action, addressing the regulatory responses
required for the purposes of meeting greenhouse gas emissions
reduction objectives for 2020 (and beyond). The book seeks to
answer such questions as: what kind of legislative approaches
should be developed to comply with EU climate law? What room for
national discretion should remain? What opportunities exist to go
beyond EU ambitions? In addition, distinguished authors analyze
national regulatory developments across selected Member States,
identifying potential areas for review and improvement. The book
offers further discussion and legal analysis of core themes such
as: long-term target setting; contrasting legislative approaches;
instrument mixes; and key linkages between environmental and energy
law. In light of the challenges confronting national legislators,
this book offers important insights into the role and contribution
of law towards improved climate protection, with potential lessons
for countries both within and outside the EU. With this in mind,
Climate Law in EU Member States will be a valuable read for
policymakers and civil servants at national ministries and at the
European Commission, carbon consultants and environmental
non-governmental organizations, as well as for academics in and
outside the EU. Contributors: E. Bergsma, J. de Cendra de Larragan,

Wise, often funny, sometimes heart-breaking, Persepolis tells the
story of Marjane Satrapi's life in Tehran , growing up during the
Iranian Revolution. The intelligent and outspoken child of radical
Marxists, and the great-grandaughter of Iran's last emperor,
Satrapi bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the
history of her country. Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait
of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between
home life and public life. Amidst the tragedy, Marjane's child's
eye view adds immediacy and humour, and her story of a childhood at
once outrageous and ordinary, beset by the unthinkable and yet
buffered by an extraordinary and loving family, is immensely
moving. 'The magic of Marjane Satrapi's work is that it can
condense a whole country's tragedy into one poignant, funny scene
after another' Independent on Sunday **ONE OF THE GUARDIAN'S 100
BEST BOOKS OF THE 21st CENTURY**
`Climate Change Liability provides an illuminating comparative
perspective on the role of the courts in this critical area. The
book probes a critical yet constructive analysis of theories of
tort liability. Beyond tort law, the book insightfully explores
alternative forms of litigation, such as actions in the ECHR to
remedy inadequate adaptation measures and public law actions to
force governments to adopt mitigation measures.' - Daniel Farber,
University of California, US `As climate change negotiations slow
down despite the growing scientific evidence, there is room for a
new approach to the problem - climate liability. This thoroughly
researched timely book discusses the different aspects of liability
and will hopefully push governments to take action!' - Joyeeta
Gupta, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands `Since the
2009 Copenhagen Climate Change conference, international efforts to
stop global warming are in disarray, making the need for innovative
approaches all the more urgent. This book explores the utility of
litigation as an alternative to conventional measures in the battle
against climate change. While acknowledging the difficulties that
attempting to impose liability can pose, it suggests and assesses
solutions to meet these challenges, thus paving the way for taking
the fight against global warming to the court room.' - Rene
Lefeber, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands This book sheds
new light on the growing issue of using liability as a tool for
both preventing and compensating for the damage caused by climate
change. Michael Faure and Marjan Peeters have brought together a
selection of expert contributors who explore a variety of both
national and European perspectives on the topic. Climate change
liability is no longer only a theoretical idea since climate change
litigation has become so hotly debated and this book examines to
what extent it can be used for mitigation and adaptation issues.
Chapters discuss the potential role of liability within various
legal systems, like the national systems of the USA and The
Netherlands, but also EU and ECHR law. Liability is outlined in a
broad perspective since not only compensation for damage suffered
by plaintiffs is discussed, but also the need for prevention in
order to obtain a reduction of greenhouse gases. This
well-documented work will be invaluable to law and environmental
science students, researchers, lawyers and civil servants.
Kornhuber and Deecke first recorded and reported the
Bereitschaftspotential in 1964. The aim of this book is to bring
together in a single volume some of the important research on the
Bereitschaftspotential and other movement-related cortical
potentials and to highlight and address some of the pertinent
questions relating to the Bereitschaftspotential and to identify
the key issues for future investigation in this field.
This book represents a unique compilation of information about
the Bereitschaftspotential and related cortical potentials and
techniques for measuring preparatory processes in the brain. The
book will be of interest to motor physiologists, psychologists and
neurologists working in clinical or research laboratories.
