With the exception of climate change, biological invasions have
probably received more attention during the past ten years than any
other ecological topic. Yet this is the first synthetic,
single-authored overview of the field since Williamson's 1996 book.
Written fifty years after the publication of Elton's pioneering
monograph on the subject, Invasion Biology provides a comprehensive
and up-to-date review of the science of biological invasions while
also offering new insights and perspectives relating to the
processes of introduction, establishment, and spread. The book
connects science with application by describing the health,
economic, and ecological impacts of invasive species as well as the
variety of management strategies developed to mitigate harmful
impacts. The author critically evaluates the approaches, findings,
and controversies that have characterized invasion biology in
recent years, and suggests a variety of future research directions.
Carefully balanced to avoid distinct taxonomic, ecosystem, and
geographic (both investigator and species) biases, the book
addresses a wide range of invasive species (including protists,
invertebrates, vertebrates, fungi, and plants) which have been
studied in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments
throughout the world by investigators equally diverse in their
origins.
This accessible and thought-provoking text will be of particular
interest to graduate level students and established researchers in
the fields of invasion biology, community ecology, conservation
biology, and restoration ecology. It will also be of value and use
to land managers, policy makers, and other professionals charged
with controlling the negative impacts associated with recently
arrived species.
Current and concise, the updated and revised 2nd Edition of this
pocket-sized reference reflects the substantial changes shaping the
evaluation and treatment of many emergency conditions today. Its
unique "signs and symptoms" approach offers the quickest possible
way to diagnose critical conditions in an emergency situation.
Organized around presenting symptoms, it can be used in real time
to answer patient care questions. Diagnoses are listed in order of
their severity in each chapter, with the symptoms, signs, suggested
workup, and patient disposition given for each diagnosis. Uses a
symptom-based approach for quick diagnosis. Features an outline
format for real-time reference. Focuses on the 200 conditions most
frequently encountered in the emergency room. Presents a useful
tool for evaluating the likelihood that a specific symptom - or
symptoms - denotes a particular disease, and allows the reader to
initiate an appropriate treatment. Includes new chapters on
emergency situations involving biological, chemical, and radiation
terrorism * chapters devoted to the challenges presented by
patients with AIDS and those with organ transplants * two chapters
on environmental emergencies * one chapter examining heat illness,
hypothermia, and submersion injury * and a chapter on
envenomations. Features expanded "Treatment Considerations"
sections.
WHO in collaboration with the International Commission for
Radiologic Education (ICRE) of the International Society of
Radiology (ISR) and the other members of the Global Steering Group
for Education and Training in Diagnostic Imaging is creating a
series of "Manuals of Diagnostic Imaging." The full series of
manuals will primarily cover the examination techniques and
interpretation of conventional diagnostic X-ray procedures. These
manuals will replace and update the WHO Manual of Radiographic
Interpretation for General Practitioners and the WHO Manual of
Radiographic Technique. The present volume in this series, the
manual Radiographic Anatomy and Interpretation of the
Musculoskeletal System, provides an exhaustive description of
radiographic normal anatomy as well as pathologic changes most
frequently seen in musculoskeletal system including trauma,
infections in bone and joints, metabolic, endocrine, and toxic
disorders, tumours, congenital and developmental disorders. Backed
by high-quality reproduction of radiographs, this manual will prove
essential reading to general practitioners, medical specialists,
radiographers and radiologists in any medical settings, although
focusing specifically on needs in small and mid-size hospitals.
