The eighth edition of this popular handbook provides a thorough and completely updated overview of the occupational safety and health field and the issues safety professionals face today, and does so in an accessible and engaging manner. An excellent introductory reference for both students and professionals, Fundamentals of Occupational Safety and Health provides practical information on technology, management, and regulatory compliance issues, covering crucial topics like organizing, staffing, directing, and evaluating occupational safety programs and procedures. All major occupational safety and health topics are addressed in this comprehensive volume, including safety-related laws and regulations, hazardous materials, workplace violence, the threat of terrorism, and OSHA's recordkeeping standard. The book includes a handy directory of resources such as safety and health associations, First Responder organizations, and state and federal agencies. The eighth edition of this go-to reference work provides an easily comprehensible and well-organized format, giving readers a wealth of occupational safety and health information right at their fingertips.
Safety Management Systems: Applications for the Aviation Industry provides an in-depth review of specific applications of an aviation-related Safety Management System (SMS) by following it from design through application. Readers will gain an understanding on SMS and how it related to their daily activities. Also, specific information will be provided on the rotocraft industry, due to variations in the challenges it faces.
Planning and Managing the Safety System addresses new regulations and practices to help you achieve safety and health management success. Emphasizing the reduction of costs through cost/benefit analysis, this book covers practical material and real-world examples of common exercises, including safety measurement and benchmarking, economic design analysis, total quality management and planning, budgeting, and using audits and safety committees effectively. This book takes a systematic approach to designing, implementing, and operating a comprehensive safety management system as part of the overall management of an organization. The emphasis will be on integrating safety into the system and effective planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the system. Major components of an effective safety system and how each operates will be addressed. * The text provides a comprehensive approach to designing, implementing, and operating a safety management system. * It will consider both historical and current (ANSI, ICAO, FAA) approaches to SMS. * It integrates the knowledge of experts into the current state of safety management. * And it will provide a comprehensive look at SMS by considering all major management components as they relate to the design, implementation, and operation of a complete safety system.
The purpose of this research is to improve combat target identification (CID) of targets using synthetic aperture radar data. In a forced decision scenario, all unknown objects are given a target class label. In this research, instead of forcing a decision, objects are labeled out-of-library (OOL) if they are unlike any objects used to train the classifier. Objects similar to more than one object, represented in the library of known objects, are given a non-declaration (NDEC) designation. This research develops a new method to identify OOL records based on squared Mahalanobis distance and NDEC methods based on information theory. A significant challenge of this research is the requirement that the methods function well in operating conditions the classifier was not designed for i.e. extended operating conditions. The potential benefits of context based modifications of OOL and NDEC criterion are demonstrated with an experimental design. Additionally, the utility of the OOL and NDEC methodologies are demonstrated through experimental design. In these experiments, a mathematical framework is used to choose the optimal classifier parameters and methodologies. The framework optimization is constrained consistent with war fighter preferences.
