"Parkett" 89 presents features on Los Angeles bricoleur Mark
Bradford, hugely acclaimed in recent years for his densely layered
torn billboard paintings that record the constant erosion of the
urban landscapes from which they are drawn, while also letting
Bradford's personal history seep through the excavated surfaces;
Oscar Tuazon, an American artist now living in Paris, who
improvises structures in pre-existing buildings and in nature,
using a combination of pre-fabricated and organic materials, from
enormous concrete blocks, steel slabs and cardboard to tree trunks
and gallery walls; New York-based painter Charline von Heyl, whose
brightly colored, heavily gestural work juggles figuration and
abstraction; and Seoul-born, Berlin-based Haegue Yang, who
assembles her installations from everyday household devices that
relay eerie psychological narratives (sometimes based on various
historical figures), and whose recent installation at the New
Museum in New York, using her signature venetian blinds, won her
much critical attention. Also featured is a conversation with K8
Hardy; and writing for the issue are Kabir Carter, Huey Copeland,
Christopher Bedford, Alan Licht, Jessica Morgan and Eileen Myles.
Reprinting for February 2020 How can we encounter the risen Lord
Jesus in a life-transforming way? How can we be equipped and
strengthened to share the message of the resurrection with the
world? The post-resurrection encounters between Jesus and the
disciples provide us with some of the most profound and personal
moments to be found in scripture. The risen Christ comes to his
disciples in all their brokenness - their sadness, fear, doubt,
shattered dreams and failure - and calls them to a future filled
with hope, confidence, confirmed faith, new beginnings and restored
lives. Encountering the Risen Christ reflects on the main
characters in the post-resurrection accounts and shows how we too
can encounter Jesus Christ in a life-transforming way. The seven
chapters plus discussion material can be used across the seven
weeks from Easter to Pentecost in individual reflection or group
study, or at any time of year.
The 'liminal seasons of life' - those transition times in which we
have left one season of stability but not yet arrived at the next -
can be times of great disorientation. Yet, for good or for ill,
they are also the most transformative. In The Space Between, Mark
Bradford provides the reader with a biblical and theological
understanding of such seasons of life, connects them with the
resources to live faithfully through them, and offers strength and
hope for the journey. Praise for Encountering the Risen Christ:
'Personal, perceptive, profound, provocative, well-resourced and
well-written; Mark Bradford offers us an imaginative and
encouraging exploration of encounter as the key and critical mode
of Christian experience and discipleship.' James Bell, former
Bishop of Ripon
