Emperor Qianlong - Son of Heaven, Man of the World (Paperback): Mark Elliot Emperor Qianlong - Son of Heaven, Man of the World (Paperback)
Mark Elliot
R1,444 Discovery Miles 14 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new entry in the Longman Library of World Biography series offers an intimate and provocative account of the Manchu emperor Qianlong (1711-1799), one of the world's great empire-builders, who helped build the foundation of the modern Chinese nation. During the 64 years of Qianlong's rule, China's population more than doubled, its territory increased by one-third, its cities flourished, and its manufactures - tea, silk, porcelain - were principal items of international commerce. Based on original Chinese and Manchu-language sources, and drawing on the latest scholarship, this is the biography of the man who, in presiding over imperial China's last golden epoch, created the geographic and demographic framework of modern China. This accessible account describes the personal struggles and public drama surrounding one of the major political figures of the early modern age, with special consideration given to the emperor's efforts to rise above ethnic divisions and to encompass the political and religious traditions of Han Chinese, Mongols, Tibetans, Turks, and other peoples of his realm. In addition to becoming familiar with one of the most remarkable figures in world history, readers will find that learning about Emperor Qianlong will add greatly to their appreciation of China's place in the world of the eighteenth century and will deepen their understanding of China's place in the world today.

Statistical Confidentiality - Principles and Practice (Paperback, 2011 ed.): George T. Duncan, Mark Elliot, Gonzalez Juan Jose... Statistical Confidentiality - Principles and Practice (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
George T. Duncan, Mark Elliot, Gonzalez Juan Jose Salazar
R1,554 Discovery Miles 15 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Because statistical confidentiality embraces the responsibility for both protecting data and ensuring its beneficial use for statistical purposes, those working with personal and proprietary data can benefit from the principles and practices this book presents. Researchers can understand why an agency holding statistical data does not respond well to the demand, "Just give me the data; I'm only going to do good things with it." Statisticians can incorporate the requirements of statistical confidentiality into their methodologies for data collection and analysis. Data stewards, caught between those eager for data and those who worry about confidentiality, can use the tools of statistical confidentiality toward satisfying both groups.
The eight chapters lay out the dilemma of data stewardship organizations (such as statistical agencies) in resolving the tension between protecting data from snoopers while providing data to legitimate users, explain disclosure risk and explore the types of attack that a data snooper might mount, present the methods of disclosure risk assessment, give techniques for statistical disclosure limitation of both tabular data and microdata, identify measures of the impact of disclosure limitation on data utility, provide restricted access methods as administrative procedures for disclosure control, and finally explore the future of statistical confidentiality.

Archaeological Research on the Societies of Late Prehistoric Xinjiang, Vol 1 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Guo Wu Archaeological Research on the Societies of Late Prehistoric Xinjiang, Vol 1 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Guo Wu; Translated by Wu Lihuan, Yan Jinglan; Contributions by Mark Elliot Seeley, Frank P. Saunders
R3,789 Discovery Miles 37 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents cutting-edge archaeological materials from Xinjiang, from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age. Through a systematic topological study of major archaeological cemeteries and sites, it establishes chronologies and cultural sequences for three main regions in Xinjiang, namely the circum-Eastern Tianshan region, the circum-Dzungarian Basin region and the circum-Tarim Basin region. It also discusses the origins and local variants of prehistoric archaeological cultures in these regions and the mutual relationships between them and neighboring cultures. By doing so, the book offers a panoramic view of the socio-cultural changes that took place in prehistoric Xinjiang from pastoral-agricultural societies to the mobile nomadic-pastoralist states in the steppe regions and the agricultural states of the oasis, making it a must-read for researchers and general readers who are interested in the archaeology of Xinjiang.

Boxed warnings minimize confusion between similar terms and concepts, and educate students about common mistakes.
The chapters that follow discuss musical forms, advanced features of songs, and rhythm and meter. The book helps students discover new ways to engage with and think about music they already know and love. It also introduces them to music that is less familiar to them. Reading through the material makes it possible for students to approach all music from a more knowledgeable perspective. A song analysis template is included so students can apply what they have learned.

Color Blind Justice - Albion Tourgee and the quest for Racial Equality from the Civil War to Plessy v. Ferguson (Paperback):... Color Blind Justice - Albion Tourgee and the quest for Racial Equality from the Civil War to Plessy v. Ferguson (Paperback)
Mark Elliot
R743 Discovery Miles 7 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Civil War officer, Reconstruction "carpetbagger," best-selling novelist, and relentless champion of equal rights, Albion Tourgee battled his entire life for racial justice. Now, in this engaging biography, Mark Elliott offers an insightful portrait of a fearless lawyer, jurist, and writer, who fought for equality long after most Americans had abandoned the ideals of Reconstruction. Elliott provides a fascinating account of Tourgee's life, from his childhood in the Western Reserve region of Ohio (then a hotbed of abolitionism), to his years as a North Carolina judge during Reconstruction, to his memorable role as lead plaintiff's counsel in the landmark Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson . Tourgee's brief coined the phrase that justice should be "color-blind," and his career was one long campaign to made good on that belief. A redoubtable lawyer and an accomplished jurist, Tourgee wrote fifteen political novels, eight books of historical and social criticism, and several hundred newspaper and magazine articles that all told represent a mountain of dissent against the prevailing tide of racial oppression. Through the lens of Tourgee's life, Elliott illuminates the war of ideas about race that raged through the United States in the nineteenth century, from the heated debate over slavery before the Civil War, through the conflict over aid to freedmen during Reconstruction, to the backlash toward the end of the century, when Tourgee saw his country retreat from the goals of equality and freedom and utterly repudiate the work of Reconstruction.
