This book discusses the role and impact of ‘Public
Criminology’. It brings together a collection of key
scholars who have been at the fore of empirical and practice work
in relation to understanding how ‘Public Criminology’ can
engender academic activism. Split into two parts, it focusses
on academic activism and research methodologies, and public
criminology and pedagogical practice. It includes chapters on a
range of topics including Inside-Out teaching, it discusses
the role of social scientists and stepping outside of
established research practices, and how students, the public
and children can be engaged in criminological learning and issues
to become agents of social change. It includes a reflection
on how ‘Public Criminology’ has developed both in the UK and
USA. It speaks to students, researchers and academics
alike involved in teaching and learning within the discipline of
Criminology and those who wish to evaluate practice and
ensure their interventions have impact on commissioners and
policymakers.

One day while sitting on a park bench, Mark was asked by an old
man, Why do you do what you do? Why do you work where you work or
live where you live? Whether we agree or not, life really is about
a series of paths and decisions whereby even one small change can
alter our lives forever. We usually want to blame others, including
God, for our decisions. Only by examining the paths we have taken
can we really see where were at! It is only when we look deep
within ourselves we discover that as writers, singers, musicians,
interior decorators, or even truck drivers, we all have gifts!
Having them is not to question; rather, it is WHAT WE DO WITH THEM
that really matters! Wherever your passions lie, you can erase your
doubts and restore your joy. Just imagine yourself on a park bench]
A talented yet ferocious player, and one of the acknowledged
'bad-boys' of rugby, Mark Jones' on-field brutality was a direct
consequence of the off-field torment he suffered with a
debilitating stammer. In Fighting to Speak, his revealing and
uplifting autobiography, Jones explains how his frustration with
his stutter led to a self-loathing and the internalising of an
explosive hate that only playing rugby could release - with his
unfortunate opponents often on the receiving end of his rage. Sent
off six times and banned for over 33 weeks for violent conduct
during his career, the dual-code Wales international and Great
Britain RL forward was desperately unhappy and detested the
thuggish reputation he'd created. After one exceptionally ugly
incident, when he broke another player's eye socket, Jones realised
that in order to defeat his demons and control his bad behaviour he
needed help to conquer his stammer. Mark Jones fought and won the
hardest battle of his life with a steely determination and has now
found the inner peace and dignity he'd longed for as a young man.
He has decided to tell his story in order to seek redemption for
his violent past on the rugby field, and to help others overcome
their stammers.
Young Angela wondered if she would live to see tomorrow as her
abuser held her head under the water at the pond in the field
behind her home. She used to feel safe here-fishing, chasing frogs,
or just walking with her dog. Victoria was very afraid of her
stepfather. Every time he told her to get in the car with him, she
knew she would have to endure another incident of sexual abuse. She
tried numerous times to tell her mother, but her mother was afraid
to deal with the situation, choosing to live in denial and allowing
Victoria to live in pain and anger. In "From Victims to Victors, "
author Mark Jones shares these and other stories of abuse from
victims to whom he has ministered. He tells these stories of
sexual, emotional, verbal, physical, and spousal abuse to call
attention to this rampant problem in today's society.Jones points
the way to healing and restoration through biblical principles. He
makes it clear that a move of God's hand can deliver victims from
the power of Satan and restore them to powerful, victorious living.

Heritage Science is emerging as a discipline that brings together
chemists, physicists, microbiologists, conservation scientists,
archaeologists and conservators. Its scope, precise boundaries and
the interfaces between its component disciplines may be in a state
of flux but, above all, its interdisciplinary nature offers
understanding of the causes, control and protection of heritage
from ever-present environmental challenges. In particular, the
activities of microbes play a central part in shaping the natural
world of our planet but this awesome power constitutes a serious
threat to the integrity of our most precious art, heritage
artefacts, monuments and cultural treasures. Heritage artefacts
that have been recovered from water, or that exist near the sea in
maritime conditions, pose special conservation problems due in main
to the combined effect of microbial activities and
physical/chemical assaults that the environment can offer. This
book is a result of the invited and updated papers from HMS2005:
Microbes, Monuments and Maritime Materials and forms a
comprehensive volume that addresses key topical areas of heritage
science and discusses the threats to a wide range of heritage
materials and monuments by biological and chemical agents of decay.
Key features of the book include: " Up-to-date summaries on the
conservation of internationally-important artefacts and monuments "
Clear outline of molecular techniques to identify microbes in
environmental heritage samples " Wide range of case studies
covering wood, stone, cave and cave paintings " Contributions
presented as fully referenced research publications giving useful
technical details and identification of areas for future study "
Informs conservators about the threats from microbes to a range of
materials " Extensive range of case studies of important world
heritage artefacts and monuments as well as an overview of in situ
preservation of historic ships " Provides background knowledge on
the use and application of modern analytical techniques in
conservation " Contains detailed information on molecular and
synchrotron techniques to assist with identifying biological and
chemical threats to heritage artefacts and monuments The book also
provides up-to-date information on subjects covering the component
field of heritage microbiology, molecular and chemical analytical
techniques, and the mechanisms of degradation and deterioration of
historic ships and buildings. The book details state-of-the-art
techniques for the study of large and small heritage objects, and
their conservation. Techniques cover the use of GIS image
processing, molecular biological analysis of environmental samples
including FISH, electrophoresis to remove corrosive ions and
synchrotron radiation to detect chemicals present in artefacts.
Several authors have developed their methods through involvement in
international collaborative projects such as BIOBRUSH, BACPOLES and
Save the Vasa. Extensive emphasis is placed on case studies and
there is a valuable section on historic ships covering the
preservation of HMS Victory, ss Great Britain, Vasa and the Mary
Rose. This book provides an indispensable guide and reference
source for those working in all areas of historical conservation,
biodeterioration, microbiology and materials science.
The astonishing year when German democracy faced crisis and near
destruction. 1923 was one of the most remarkable years of modern
European history. In January, France and Belgium militarily
occupied Germany's economic heartland, the Ruhr; triggering a
series of crises that almost spiralled out of control.
Hyperinflation plunged millions into poverty. The search for
scapegoats empowered political extremes. Hitler's populism ascended
to national prominence. Communists, Nazis, separatists all thought
that they could use the crises to destroy democracy. None
succeeded. 1923 was the year of Hitler's first victory - and his
first defeat. Fanning the flames of instability, anti-government
and antisemitic sentiment, the Nazis abortive yet pivotal putsch in
a Munich beer hall failed when they were abandoned by their
likeminded conservative allies. Drawing on previously unseen
sources, Mark Jones weaves together a thrilling and resonant image
of a modern society in extreme crisis.
Covering criminal justice history on a cross-national basis, this
book surveys criminal justice in Western civilization and American
life chronologically from ancient times to the present. It is an
introduction to the historical problems of crime, law enforcement
and penology, set against the background of major historical events
and movements. Integrating criminal justice history into the scope
of European, British, French and American history, this text
provides the opportunity for comparisons of crime and punishment
over boundaries of national histories. The text now concludes with
a chapter that addresses terrorism and homeland security.

For half a century the Royal Hippodrome was the most popular place
of entertainment in Eastbourne, with shows twice-nightly, 52 weeks
a year. Its management fought off predatory syndicates and steered
independently through both World Wars, the rise of cinema, radio,
talkies and, finally, the advent of television. The story of this
remarkable theatre is set in the context of the growth of
Eastbourne as a resort and the wider history of variety theatre in
Britain. It contains contemporary reviews of such artists as Lottie
Collins, Robb Wilton, P.T. Selbit, Hylda Baker, Max Bygraves and
Harry Secombe.

Tracing Hitler's rise, we see how political pragmatism and
international cooperation eventually steered the nation away from
total insurrection. A decade later, when Weimar democracy
eventually succumbed to tyranny, the warnings from 1923 - rising of
nationalist rhetoric, fragile European consensus, and
underestimation the of the enemies of liberalism - became only too
apparent. This account of the republic's convulsions and survival
offers a gripping image of a modern society in extreme crisis.
