In this book, authors from a variety of disciplines examine how the
interpretative disciplines deal with the lack or loss of certainty
for their signs and texts. The focus is on forms of scepticism and
theories of probability in the period from 1550 to 1850 which make
it possible to access conceptualisations of a oeuncertaina or a
oeweaka knowledge. Using historical source-material, the volume
takes up impulses from research into probability and scepticism.
The series, founded in 1970, publishes works which either combine
studies in the history of philosophy with a systematic approach or
bring together systematic studies with reconstructions from the
history of philosophy. Monographs are published in English as well
as in German. The founding editors are Erhard Scheibe (editor until
1991), Gunther Patzig (until 1999) and Wolfgang Wieland (until
2003). From 1990 to 2007, the series had been co-edited by Jurgen
Mittelstrass, and from 2005 to 2020 by Jens Halfwassen.
It seems to be self-evident that through perception we gain access
to the material world. That visual perception takes an important
role seems self-evident as well. But what exactly do we see? The
objects themselves or just their perceptible properties? How do we
manage to see something at all? Are we capable of seeing solely
through optical and physiological processes or does viewing
something asks for presupposed terms in order to help us to see
something as something? These questions, currently discussed at
great length within the framework of cognitive and epistemological
theory, were already cause for intensive debate in the early modern
times. In many aspects, those discussions in the 17th and 18th
century laid the groundwork for todaya (TM)s theories: on one hand,
they identified the problems with great clarity and on the other,
they provided strategies for possible solutions which are still of
value today. This volume will provide new access to those debates
(from Descartes to Reid) and will present these debates to an
audience interested in philosophical questions. The book shows that
the early modern times is not just a respectable museum in the
history of philosophy, but on the contrary, a very productive and
stimulating philosophical epoch which invites further discussion.
Animal minds and animal ethics - different origins, connecting
similarities. Philosophers working on questions of animal ethics
usually draw on research into animal cognition and subscribe to
strong positions regarding animal minds. Whereas philosophers
interested in the question of animal minds sometimes draw ethical
conclusions from the positions they argue for. In spite of such
overlaps, these two areas of research have grown up separately. One
reason for this separation stems from the institutional distinction
between theoretical and practical philosophy. The principal aim of
this anthology is to build bridges between the fields and different
philosophical approaches of animal ethics and of animal minds and
cognition.
