This is the first book in the B Series to use sentences consistently. The only capital letters used are 'T, S, I' in 'The, Sam, I'. The only 'tricky' words are 'the' and 'I', although the word 'see' is introduced. By drawing two eyes in the letters 'ee', this word acts as its own mnemonic. The rest of the vocabulary consists of simple phonic CVC words although the verb 'hops' sometimes causes difficulties for young children because it has an 's' at the end.
