"I don't care for vocational books written in the United States; they're too American." When Susan Maros heard this comment from a Malaysian colleague, she was initially taken aback. Isn't the concept of calling universal? Why wouldn't resources with a biblical perspective on vocation apply to everyone? The reality is that each of us encounters our questions of calling from within a particular context. In this paradigm-shifting book, Maros explores how various dimensions of social location-including race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, and gender-shape our assumptions and experiences with vocation. Maros helps Christians in the United States in particular see how ideas about calling that emphasize certainty, career paths, and personal achievement arise from cultural priorities that shouldn't go unexamined, such as individualism, productivity, and meritocracy. She explains how unexamined "mental maps" can distort our perspective and refocuses our attention on biblical insights about calling as a lifelong journey. In the process, she helps us find both clarity and encouragement to explore the paths before us. God calls all people, yes-but calling is not a monolithic concept. Filled with numerous stories from Christians in diverse communities, Calling in Context invites anyone exploring questions of calling to find fresh possibilities in their own identity and engagement with God's mission. Reflection questions and Bible study prompts are included throughout.
The book covers the topic of the role of public sector in the economic and territorial development across several dimensions of spatial planning, e.g. theoretical-methodological (planning cultures, leadership), executive (regional policies, services of general interest), sectoral (energy, tourism, air-quality) or social (social innovation, preservation of cultural heritage). The book delivers up-to date knowledge build on interactions between representatives of different stakeholders of economic and territorial development with the research represented by renowned experts and academicians. This is mirrored in the content of the book, delivering in a consistent form the conceptual explanations combined with the examples of the role of the public sector in fostering the local economies within the frame of spatial planning. The book reflects and transfers the expert knowledge which has been generated during more than a decade of scientific and research activities of Spa-ce.net. Presents a comprehensive view on different aspects of the involvement of public sector in the local and regional spatial development; Includes a combination of macro-regionally specific perspectives with the generalized knowledge; Provides knowledge from various researchers from prestigious European scientific and research teams.

Environmental Change in Lesotho identifies and analyzes the drivers of land-use change and the consequences of these changes on the livelihoods of rural land-users/managers. To accomplish this, a combination of tools from the social sciences and environmental fields were developed to identify causes and consequences of land-use change at selected levels, using a 'nested' approach. These methods were then applied to a case study of two villages in the Lowland region of Lesotho. This book is directed at environmental and social science experts, researchers, decision-makers, and development/aid workers interested in understanding the intricate human-environment relationship as it relates to land-use change in a changing biophysical, socio-economic, political and institutional context, coupled by HIV/AIDS, changing demographics, local perceptions and what is termed here 'dependency syndrome'.
Linear Programming (LP) is perhaps the most frequently used
optimization technique. One of the reasons for its wide use is that
very powerful solution algorithms exist for linear optimization.
Computer programs based on either the simplex or interior point
methods are capable of solving very large-scale problems with high
reliability and within reasonable time. Model builders are aware of
this and often try to formulate real-life problems within this
framework to ensure they can be solved efficiently. It is also true
that many real-life optimization problems can be formulated as
truly linear models and also many others can well be approximated
by linearization. The two main methods for solving LP problems are
the variants of the simplex method and the interior point methods
(IPMs). It turns out that both variants have their role in solving
different problems. It has been recognized that, since the
introduction of the IPMs, the efficiency of simplex based solvers
has increased by two orders of magnitude. This increased efficiency
can be attributed to the following: (1) theoretical developments in
the underlying algorithms, (2) inclusion of results of computer
science, (3) using the principles of software engineering, and (4)
taking into account the state-of-the-art in computer technology.
As developments in the European Union and elsewhere make the re-examination of citizenship a pressing issue, this book reflects on the persisting "masculine" character of contemporary democracy and the measures taken in the EU to combat it. Combining a theoretical approach with a specific critique of EU gender policy, The Gender of Democracy argues that substantial democracy as a social project cannot co-exist with the existing system of gender relations ,which are inherently dichotomous and thus demarcate social categories of superior and inferior status. Drawing on utopian thought, Maro Pantelidou Maloutas proposes a re-examination of the notion of the gendered subject and a revision of the dominant perceptions of the relations between sex, sexuality and gender. The book contains a critique of specific EU gender policies and shows how in seeking to do away with gender inequality, simply formulating policies that are pro-women is not enough. In order to approach democracy's emancipatory component, far-reaching policies which deconstruct rather than modernize gender relations are needed.

In the course of the tremendous political and economic upheaval starting in 1989/1990 many industrial cities and regions in Central and Eastern Europe have been confronted with profound problems. This book presents eleven detailed national reports which describe the situation in such cities and regions as well as the strategies which have been employed to cope with structural change. The country reports are complemented by short case studies of selected cities and regions. An introduction gives background to such topics as structural change and the ramifications of EU enlargement. Finally some conclusions are drawn and recommendations offered for future policy.
Externally the vertebrate body plan presents a bilateral symmetry in relation to the midline. However, inside the body the distribution of the visceral organs follows a very particular pattern that is not symmetrical in relation to the midline. The last 10 years have seen remarkable advances in our understanding of how the internal asymmetries typical of the vertebrate body are established and controlled. The use of different development models has permitted to uncover fascinating ways of creating asymmetry, like the activity of the nodal cilia. A host of studies has also unravelled the involvement of many genes in the left right patterning pathway. Based on this knowledge the genetic basis of human laterality defects are beginning to be revealed. It is a major challenge now to understand how all these genes control left right development as well as the complex set of interactions established between them.

Imperial Prince Demetrio and his advisers are stumped. And for good reason, too. Wein, the Crown Prince of Natra, has joined their meeting, and he wasn’t really invited. Wein is technically only here to return a favor to Imperial Princess Lowellmina, who can’t stand to watch her three brothers rip each other apart for the throne. Somehow or other, he finds himself teamed up with Demetrio, who seems like he’s the least likely of the three to become the next emperor...
Even as the heir to the throne, Prince Wein of Natra continues to plan out his scheme to cash in on his puny kingdom and retire in hiding for good. But when a princess from the Empire catches wind of his successive victories, she waltzes into his palace to ask for...his hand in marriage!?
The Gathering of the Chosen. Once again, Wein finds himself with an invitation to a conference with some of most influential figures on the western continent. It's obvious that this is a ploy to sever his ties with the Empire, but Wein actively chooses to attend, if only to stir the pot. As soon as he steps foot in the host city of Lushan, however, he's framed for a murder he didn't commit!
Mealtars was a bust! All it accomplished was bring even more attention to the small kingdom of Natra. After that debacle, Wein has his eyes locked on Marden, which has seen explosive growth in recent days. Most importantly, it serves as their gate to the West. To keep the country in check, Wein decides it might finally be time to form ties...with King Gruyere from Soljest.
At the behest of Holy Elite Agata, Wein visits the Ulbeth Alliance, where several cities are locked in a power struggle for control over the region. Though Agata asks for his assistance in unifying the nation, Wein suspects the Elector has ulterior motives, and launches a secret operation while keeping up the facade of cooperation. It's a plan that could disrupt long-held traditions and upset the delicate balance of power in the Alliance, but Wein proceeds with his latest ploy as carefree as ever!
