Unknown during her lifetime, held by an intimate public in peculiar affection after her death as her first posthumous publications reached an outside world, later neglected for many years by public and critics alike and classified in 1912 as a forgotten poetess, her present eminence is a special triumph, unique in the annals of American letters.
