Reinhard Brandl proposes a method to derive estimates for the expected resource consumption of customer-oriented services during standard load tests. This facilitates the determination of usage-based cost allocation keys significantly. He implements the concept in a software tool kit, evaluates it in a set of experiments with multi-tier database applications, and analyzes how the method can be integrated into existing IT processes at the BMW Group.

We welcome you to the proceedings of the 5t International Conference on E- CommerceandWebTechnology(EC-Web2004)heldinconjunctionwithDEXA 2004 in Zaragoza, Spain. This conference, ?rst held in Greenwich, United Ki- dom in 2000, now is in its ?fth year and very well established. As in the four previous years, it served as a forum to bring together researchersfrom academia and commercial developers from industry to discuss the current state of the art in e-commerce and Web technology. Inspirations and new ideas emerged from intensive discussions during formal sessions and social events. Keynote addresses, research presentations and discussions during the c- ference helped to further develop the exchange of ideas among the researchers, developers and practitioners present. The conference attracted 103 paper submissions and almost every paper was reviewed by three program committee members. The program committee - lected 37 papers for presentationand publication, a task which was not easy due to the high quality of the submitted papers. We would like to express our thanks to our colleagues who helped with putting together the technical program: the program committee members and external reviewers for their timely and rigorous reviews of the papers, and the organizing committee for their help in the administrative work and support. We owe special thanks to Gabriela Wagner, Mirella Koster, and Birgit Hauer for their helping hands concerning the administrative and organizational tasks of this conference. Finally, wewouldliketothankalltheauthorswhosubmittedpapers, authors who presented papers, and the participants who together made this conference an intellectually stimulating event through their active contributions.

Combining economics with computer science this book is designed to empower business people to apply this new technology for the design, implementation and upgrade of electronic markets. For professionals, consultants, dotcomers and technology managers, as well as researchers in economics, information systems, operations management, computer science and observers of the e-Commerce phenomenon.
The digital economy led to many new services where supply is matched with demand for various types of goods and services. More and more people and organizations are now in a position to design market rules that are being implemented in software. The design of markets is challenging as it needs to consider strategic behavior of market participants, psychological factors, and computational problems in order to implement the objectives of a designer. Market models in economics have not lost their importance, but the recent years have led to many new insights and principles for the design of markets, which are beyond traditional economic theory. This book introduces the fundamentals of market design, an engineering field concerned with the design of real-world markets.
Following the successful PCS Auction conducted by the US Federal Communications Commission in 1994, auctions have replaced traditional ways of allocating valuable radio spectrum, a key resource for any mobile telecommunications operator. Spectrum auctions have raised billions of dollars worldwide and have become a role model for market-based approaches in the public and private sectors. The design of spectrum auctions is a central application of game theory and auction theory due to its importance in industry and the theoretical challenges it presents. Several auction formats have been developed with different properties addressing fundamental questions about efficiently selling multiple objects to a group of buyers. This comprehensive handbook features classic papers and new contributions by international experts on all aspects of spectrum auction design, including pros and cons of different auctions and lessons learned from theory, experiments, and the field, providing a valuable resource for regulators, telecommunications professionals, consultants, and researchers.

Oktober 2004 in Kraft trat.
