Are you a senior carer or team leader who wishes to progress to management? Or an existing care home manager interested in improving the standard of care you offer? Essential reading for anyone considering career progression to manager level, Managing to Care: The Care Home Manager's Guide explores the role of the care home manager, and the preparation, experience and training this involves. This invaluable guide will navigate the reader through their journey to becoming a manager, from analysing their leadership abilities and interpersonal skills when delivering care, to examining their personal and professional qualities and exploring their management ambitions and the ways in which they can achieve these in the care home. Honest, engaging and informative, with a foreword by Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, Managing to Care will help carers evaluate the experience they have gained from working in a home, reflect on where they are now and where they would like to be in the future. The helpful guide will provide all the encouragement and practical direction needed by carers - either to improve the level of care that they are currently offering, or to make the important transition to manager.

Railway Walks - Circular Walks Along Abandoned Railway Lines in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire (Paperback): Martin Green Railway Walks - Circular Walks Along Abandoned Railway Lines in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire (Paperback)
Martin Green; Illustrated by Peter Reardon
R239 Discovery Miles 2 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

England used to enjoy one of the most comprehensive railway networks in Europe. By the last decade of the 19th century there was hardly a hamlet in the land which could not be reached by train itself or after a brief ride in a pony and trap from the nearest station. However, the improved reliability and sheer convenience of internal combustion engined road vehicles brought competition to the railways which caused a steady and persistent decline in freight and passengers throughout the second half of the 20th century. By then the railways, initially funded by private enterprise, had been nationalized as a state asset. This left the state paying for trains which ran at a loss for lack of goods and people to fill them. During the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, successive governments sought to staunch this outflow of funds by closing thousands of miles of railway lines and hundreds of stations. Many of these were branch lines, that is a track leaving the main line to serve a specific place but going no further. At a stroke, large parts of the huge 19th-century civil engineering effort which went into building the network were redundant and, once any salvage of value was removed, duly abandoned. By and large, it was not economic to reinstate the cuttings, embankments and bridges built to give the most straight and level route possible for each line. What is left of these abandoned lines can offer rewarding walks through the heart of the countryside, away from roads and traffic, rich in flora and fauna and littered with dramatic examples of Victorian civil engineering. In short, there is something to the taste of the routine walker and the railway enthusiast. For either type they are best done twice, once in summer and once in winter. The summer will show what grows where the plow and the sprayer to not go, while the winter will show the detail of what was built, well over a century ago. This book features 12 of these walks throughout Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Improving Dairy Herd Health (Hardcover): Emile Bouchard Improving Dairy Herd Health (Hardcover)
Emile Bouchard; Contributions by John Remnant, James Breen, Peter Down, Chris Hudson, …
R4,932 Discovery Miles 49 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Increasing concern about over-reliance on antibiotics (resulting in antimicrobial resistance), as well as broader concerns about animal welfare, have put greater emphasis on preventative measures in maintaining the health of farm animals. Herd health management (HHM) programmes take a population approach based on quantitative epidemiology which makes it possible to assess disease risk and, as a result, prevent and manage diseases more effectively. Improving dairy herd health reviews key challenges in dairy herd health management, such as effective monitoring and diagnosis of infectious diseases, as well as recent developments in areas such as disease prevention and disease surveillance. This collection reviews HHM issues across the dairy cow life cycle, from reproduction and calf health to the transition stage and replacement of stock. Later chapters discuss the successful implementation of HHM programmes in specific instances, from maintaining udder and hoof health, to preventing metabolic disorders, bacterial and viral diseases, as well as parasitic infections.

The Essential Family Guide to Caring for Older People (Paperback): Deborah Stone The Essential Family Guide to Caring for Older People (Paperback)
Deborah Stone; Foreword by Martin Green 1
R446 Discovery Miles 4 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

No one wants to think about getting older. It's true. At any age, when things are moving along normally day to day and everyone seems fit and well, there seems no reason to think about future problems that your friends and relatives might (and probably will) come across as they age. In fact, it might even seem a little morbid to think such thoughts, or possibly even tempting fate? Yet there will come a time when you must raise these issues and, ideally, this should be before any problems arise. The Essential Family Guide to Caring for Older People is the ultimate source of information and help for families with care responsibilities. Deborah Stone draws on her extensive experience working in elder care to offer practical advice on every aspect of the field indepth. Topics range from how to get help immediately, legal information, care funding options, a guide to useful technology and advice on the main physical and mental health issues that affect older people. Plus guidance is given on dealing with social services and ensuring you choose the right care for your situations. Crucially, the book also offers help on how to cope as a carer with practical advice on juggling family, work and your caring responsibilities while looking after yourself.
