This reference handbook surveys research on the central issue
associated with the teaching of unprepared writers. Though basic
writing has only been recognized as a distinct area of teaching and
research since 1975, the existing bibliographic texts already seem
limited due to their age or lack of annotation. This volume
provides current and extensive bibliographic essays and will help
to define this new field of study for teachers and researchers.
Following an introduction that summarizes the origins and
significant texts in basic writing, the book is divided into three
sections, Social Science Perspectives, Linguistic Perspectives, and
Pedagogical Perspectives. The first section, which contains three
essays, views the field through the lens of social, psychological,
and political issues. The second section, also containing three
essays, examines contributions made from studies of grammar,
dialects, and second-language acquisition. The third section, in
its four essays, focuses on the design, development,
administration, and evaluation of basic writing courses, the use of
computers in basic writing classrooms, the role of the writing lab,
and the preparation of basic writing teachers. An appendix that
reviews current textbooks for basic writing courses is also
included, as well as an index. This book will be a valuable
resource for teachers of basic writing, in education courses and
workshops that train teachers and tutors, and in fields such as
linguistics, technical writing, and Teaching English as a Second
Language. It will also be an important addition to public and
university libraries and many education programs.
Richard M. Weaver (1910-1963) was one of the leading rhetoricians
of the 1950s, whose philosophical and pedagogical writings helped
revitalize interest in rhetoric. His rhetorical contributions are
difficult to separate from his conservative stances on social and
political issues; and, indeed, he espoused the cultural role of
rhetoric, conceiving of his intellectual task as one of reinventing
a philosophical conservatism and employing rhetorical theory to
oppose liberalism and modernism. Today, his politics would be
viewed as extreme by liberals, feminists, and civil libertarians;
on the other hand, his theories laid the philosophical groundwork
for contemporary American political conservatism, and his
argumentation on a number of social issues remains pertinent. This
first full-length study of Weaver examines the relationship between
his rhetorical theory and his cultural views, focusing on the
rhetorical insights---for instance, his conception of language as
sermonic, its function being to influence others to think and act
according to the speaker's moral precepts and, ideally, to convey
the abiding truth of a culture. Authors Duffy and Jacobi advance
the idea that Weaver was at his best as an epideictic rhetor,
engaged in the celebration of abstract values, and at his worst as
a forensic rhetor, pleading conservative causes with no more than
the pretense of impartiality. Based largely on primary materials
but with adroit application of previous criticism, this work will
be valuable for a wide range of research specialties in rhetoric
and public address.
The mountains of Caucasia lie between the Black and Caspian Seas
and on the boundary between Europe and Asia. They include the
highest, most dramatic, least spoiled and least known mountain
ranges of the northern hemisphere after the Himalayas and Rockies.
The area supports about 6,400 species of vascular plant of which a
quarter occur nowhere else (i.e. they are endemic to the region),
and about 850 species of vertebrate animal of which some 120 are
endemic. This is the highest percentage of endemism in the
temperate world, and makes Caucasia one of the most important
hotspots of biodiversity on Earth. Mountain Flowers & Trees of
Caucasia describes and illustrates in full colour nearly all the
wild flowers, trees and shrubs that can be found over 1,000 metres
above sea level - 1,009 species. The authors hope that this field
guide will encourage you to visit the mountains of Caucasia to
delight in their unique and spectacular assemblage of flowering
plants, and so contribute to its conservation. The authors include
an overview of vegetation in Caucasia, along with a key to
families, and keys to genera of selected families. This second
edition has increased the number of species described to over a
thousand, and adopted the modern systematic order of Plant Families
described by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group to show evolutionary
relationships. The order of genera within each Family generally
follows that of Flora Europaea. To ease the problem of synonyms,
Mountain Flowers not only makes use of The Plant List (tPL), which
is easily accessible on line, but gives a substantial list of other
synonyms not included in tPL. Each species has a unique number
which allows its description, photograph, synonyms and index entry
to be easily linked.
Rier lernt der Arzt, was
naturwissenschaftlich feststeht. Wer experimentelle Therapie stu-
Berlin, September 1919. Martin Jacoby. Inhaltsverzeic hnis.
Every two seconds five more babies are born than people die. That's
about the population of London or New York every five weeks. The
United Nations Charter of Human Rights requires that everyone have
an adequate standard of living. This means that we must build the
equivalent of a new London or New York every five weeks before we
can start helping the 11/2 billion people already living in
poverty. Madness. It can't be done. So what shall we do? THE HUMAN
POPULATION TSUNAMI is about facts: facts and the deductions that
can be drawn from them by logical thought. It is not about emotions
or rules, though it looks at how both influence our thinking. The
book's basic premise is that there are no mysteries - only things
we don't yet understand. With this in mind, concepts like
individuality, morality and immortality become surprisingly simple.
We need to understand what they really are if we are to make
rational decisions about our future. To overcome the mental
barriers we throw up to protect ourselves against painful reality,
this book describes how they evolved and what were their original
survival values. To do this, it outlines the chain of events that
led from Big Bang (if such an event ever occurred) to your
consciousness as you read these lines. There is no evidence for a
break in that sequence of physico-chemical changes. Such a notion
gives confidence in proposing how we could manage the
fast-approaching population tsunami. Though these measures are
unacceptable to feelings and rule-books such as holy texts, they
make sense when thought about clearly in the light of modern
knowledge and understanding. During our children's lives, about a
billion people will die. Either they can die full of years and
under the rule of law or messily, many while still young, as
governments collapse or go rogue and war-lords scramble for
diminishing resources. Where reality comes to rest between these
two extreme scenarios depends on the laws we persuade our
politicians to pass now. We have no choice other than to act within
the law; the difficulty lies in persuading people to pass laws that
are effective. It's no good praying for some plague or benign
dictator to spare us the responsibility of making harsh decisions.
It is up to us now, however much our feelings hurt and the ancient
texts disagree. Our first step is to start talking about the
disaster facing us, and to push those conversations upwards to
government - as is the way of English Common Law. The solution is
simple: we change the purpose of punishment from correction to
population reduction. That's awful; but it must also be lawful. All
people are united by being of one genetic species and by sharing
Planet Earth. Since we have begun to speciate on behavioural rather
than genetic grounds, it will unite our behaviour if we can agree
on a common purpose. This book argues tautly the case for aiming at
preserving our understanding of the Earth rather than turning its
fast-diminishing and fragile beauty into yet more human waste. Even
though the solar system will pass away and the Universe eventually
suffer heat-death, the Epilogue casts a shade of doubt on Keynes's
pessimistic cry 'in long run we are all dead'. We really do need
