On Pietermaritzburg station in 1893 a young Indian lawyer, newly arrived in South Africa, was ejected from a train to Pretoria for insisting on his right to travel first class. It was to the cold night hours spent in the waiting-room that Gandhi himself traced the genesis of his great resolve - to fight injustice by non-violent means. Crucial as this episode was, it was but one of the manifold influences which shaped the Gandhi-to-be during his sojourn in South Africa. This title arose from a conference held a century later, in 1993, at the Universtiy of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, to reaffirm the South African Gandhi. It traces some of the influences which effected his transformation from an unsuccessful and insecure young man to a mature political and spiritual leader ready to carve his niche in history after his return to Indian in 1914. The Mahatma's moral vision, of a way to resolve conflict and right injustice without resorting to violence, remains relevant to post-apartheid South Africa and to the world. It also remains a difficult vision to grasp; but a better understanding of his vital formative years will perhaps help to make it more accessible.

The book covers the curriculum on applied ethics as outlined in the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) education requirements for the Qualifying Examination (revised in 2005). The book is therefore aimed at B Comm (Accounting) students who will be examined in the CA board exam on the practice of ethics in addition to being a concise guide to the legal and ethical rules for accountants. The book is written by accountants, auditors, and philosophers for accountants and auditors and as such offers high-level coverage of basic philosophies on ethics as well as in-depth coverage of related legislation/codes of conduct within the accounting profession. Many chapters begin with a short case study (set in the South African context) to introduce the principles to be discussed in the rest of the chapter; continual reference is then made throughout the rest of each chapter to the short opening case study. The new edition is updated with new, vibrant case studies.

Conscience - Ethical Intelligence for Global Well-being (Paperback): Martin Prozesky Conscience - Ethical Intelligence for Global Well-being (Paperback)
Martin Prozesky
R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The world of the early twenty-first century is in deep moral crisis. It is not difficult to imagine a respected leader such as the Dalai Lama or Nelson Mandela uttering these words. The news media and personal experiences prove them to be true, virtually every day. From grinding poverty to corrupt politicians, unscrupulous business people and organised criminal gangs, from sexual violence to armed robberies, war-mongers and thuggery in schools, who can doubt the grim warning of these words? Authored by a leading South African ethics consultant, writer and academic, this title is intended for educated, general readers and shows us how to draw on the deepest wells of ethical power in ourselves and our value systems, both religious and secular, in order to promote greater, sustainable well-being for all. It maps out a potentially global ethic, providing practical resources of heart, mind and hands with which we can become citizens of conscience.
