'If you thought butterflies were special, the clear intelligible
science in this superb page-turner will make you realise they're
ultra-special' - MATTHEW OATES This new addition to the British
Wildlife Collection is a unique take on butterfly behaviour and
ecology, written by the former Chief Executive of Butterfly
Conservation, Martin Warren. It explores the secret lives of our
British species (also drawing on comparative examples from
continental Europe), revealing how they have become adapted to
survive in such a highly competitive natural world. Combining
personal anecdote with the latest discoveries in the scientific
literature, this book covers everything from why we love
butterflies and their life-cycle from egg to adult, to their
struggle for survival in a world of predators and parasites and the
miracle of migration. The final chapters explore how butterflies
are recorded, the change in their ranges and abundance during the
20th and 21st centuries, and the significance of managing habitats
at a landscape scale, concluding with a passionate plea for why we
must act now to reverse butterfly declines. Insightful, inspiring
and a joy to read, Butterflies is the culmination of a lifetime of
careful research into what makes these beautiful insects tick and
how and why we must conserve them.
The Convention on Biological Diversity set a world target: "to
achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of
biodiversity loss". The EU went further, aiming to halt
biodiversity loss by 2010. In March 2010, the charity Butterfly
Conservation held its 6th International Symposium on 'The 2010
Target and Beyond for Lepidoptera'. This book, edited by John
Dover, Martin Warren and Tim Shreeve and with a Forward by Sir
David Attenborough, is a collection of papers from that meeting.
The book documents the failure to achieve the 2010 targets and the
urgent need to redouble conservation efforts. Papers presented on
'Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation', 'The Science of
Conservation Management', 'Landscape-scale Conservation' and
'Future Challenges' illustrate some of the problems we face, but
also demonstrate that, with the application of the right tools and
knowledge and with sufficient determination, butterflies, moths,
and their habitats can have a secure future.
Extensive progress has been made in the science and practice of
field crop production since the Third Edition was published in
1976. Advances in the knowledge of how plants grow and respond to
their environment, a better understanding of plant processes at the
molecular level, and the ability to directly manipulate chromosomal
material using biotechnology are but a few examples. Additionally,
improvements in the equipment used in field crop production have
allowed producers to more efficiently manage soil resources,
provide accurate supplies of soil nutrients, and more efficiently
harvest crops. Although the information in the book has been
extensively updated, some of the older, more traditional
information has been retained for historical purposes to show how
crop production has progressed over the 50 plus years this book has
been in print. "Principles of Field Crop Production" has long been
one of the most comprehensive books on this topic in the world. The
Fourth Edition is completely updated and discusses the advances in
science and technology that are used today. It also reflects the
changing emphasis of crop production in the US and the world.
Provides comprehensive information on the management and use of all
economically important field crops.Provides general information on
crop production practices.Provides a historical perspective of crop
production as well as current technology. An excellent resource for
persons who are involved in providing support and services to crop
producers, as well as producers themselves. Also valuable as a
reference book for agronomists, soil scientists, farmers, and
ranchers.
