With attention to the methodological questions that arise from the attempt to study such changes empirically, it offers new theoretical foundations for understanding the social construction and reconstruction of spaces through communicative action. Seeing communicative action as the basic element in the social construction of reality and conceptualizing communication not only in terms of the use of language and texts, but as involving any kind of objectification, such as technologies, bodies and non-verbal signs, it considers the roles of both direct and mediatized (or digitized) communication. An examination of the conceptualization of the communicative (re-)construction of spaces and the means by which this change might be empirically investigated, this book demonstrates the fruitfulness of the notion of refiguration as a means by which to understand the transformation of contemporary societies. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, social theorists, and geographers with interests in social construction and urban space.

In this book, the author develops a relational concept of space that encompasses social structure, the material world of objects and bodies, and the symbolic dimension of the social world. Loew's guiding principle is the assumption that space emerges in the interplay between objects, structures and actions. Based on a critical discussion of classic theories of space, Loew develops a new dynamic theory of space that accounts for the relational context in which space is constituted. This innovative view on the interdependency of material, social, and symbolic dimensions of space also permits a new perspective on architecture and urban development.

Allerdings sind nicht die Gegenstande der Analyse verschwunden, sondern die Benennung in Machtkategorien. Urban Design Methods is a manual for reconciling contemporary approaches with increasingly complex demands in the shaping of urban living spaces. Architects and landscape architects, as well as city, regional, and landscape planners, often find that they are unable to do modern projects justice with their specialist skills alone. Cooperative approaches are needed to deal with both the complexity of raising questions and the growing number of affected parties who need to be involved. Raume eine materielle und eine symbolische Komponente haben. Die Autor- Innen akzentuieren unterschiedlich den einen oder anderen Aspekt. In diesem ersten Teil betont Martina Loew die Unterscheidung verschiedener Raumvor- stellungen. Jutta Ecarius untersucht altersspezifische Sozialraume. Christina Schues analysiert die Grenzziehung zwischen oeffentlichen und privaten Raumen im Kontext von Erziehung. Gabriele Geiger nimmt Materialisierun- gen von Raum, Reinhard Hoerster Heterotopien zum Ausgangspunkt ihrer/ seiner UEberlegungen. Der zweite Teil ist starker empirisch aufgebaut und bezieht sich daher auf unterschiedliche Raum-"Ausschnitte" Mediale Raume im Vergleich zu realen Raumen, Stadt und Land. Wahrend sich Birgit Richard/Heinz-Her- mann Kruger jugendspezifischen Raumen zuwenden, richtet Christine Ah- rend ihr Augenmerk auf kindliche Raume. Ingrid Breckner/Gabriele Sturm diskutieren die Bedeutung und Moeglichkeiten raumlichen Verstehens fur Lernprozesse. Burkhard Fuhs stellt sich die Frage, wie die erziehungswissen- schaftliche Kindheitsforschung mit den Begriffen Stadt/Land arbeitet und inwieweit diese in die padagogische Theoriebildung einfliessen. Dieses Buch kann nur ein Anfang sein. Immer wieder stossen die Autor- Innen auf das Problem, dass die theoretischen UEberlegungen zu Raum unge- nugend sind, insbesondere dann, wenn Veranderungen erfasst werden sollen. Aber auch die Notwendigkeit empirischer Forschung wird deutiich. Wenn es mit diesem Buch gelingt, den Eindruck zu verunsichern, dass die Zeit fort- schreitet, "wahrend Raum nur herumlungert" (Massey 1993, 118) und damit Neugierde auf Raum als Prozess zu wecken, dann sind wir zufrieden. Martina Loew, Dorothee Meister, Uwe Sander Padagogik zwischen Kontinuitat und Wandel Dieser Sammelband greift mit seinem Titel die alltagssprachliche Metapher des 'Umbruchs' auf, mit der fur die neuen Bundeslander seit 1990 in vielen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen eine normative Zielvorgabe gesellschaftlicher Veranderungen verbunden ist: der Wechsel ehemaliger DDR-Verhaltnisse in bundesrepublikanische Verhaltnisse. Erwartet und im Wort des 'Umbruchs' verankert wird ein radikaler Wechsel aller gesellschaftlichen Verhaltnisse -und zwar kein langsamer, ausgehandelter Prozess einer beid seitiger Annaherung, sondern eine einseitige Anpassung. Fur sensible ge sellschaftliche Bereiche, zu denen die Padagogik als Theorie und Praxis der Bildung, Qualifikation und Erziehung gehoert, gilt dieser Anspruch beson ders. Mehr oder minder ausdrucklich werden padagogische Felder als Ob jekt und als Medium des 'Umbruchs' behandelt. An die systematische Bil dung und Erziehung werden in besonderer Art ideologische und inhaltliche Umorientierungen herangetragen: Zum einen muss eine DDR-Padagogik in eine BRD-Padagogik transformiert werden, und zum anderen bekommt diese neue BRD-Padagogik die Aufgabe, Umbruchprozesse in anderen ge sellschaftlichen Bereichen (im Bereich der Arbeit, der Freizeit und des So zialen) zu befoerdern und zu unterstutzen. Und tatsachlich setzt nach 1990 in den neuen Bundeslandern ein rasanter Prozess der gesellschaftlichen Veranderung ein, dessen Ausmass gewohnte Vorstellungen sozialer Dynamik bei weitem ubertrifft. In kurzester Zeit an dern sich die politischen, rechtlichen und wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedin gungen. Rechtliche Grundlagen, Organisationen und institutionelle Struktu ren werden ausgetauscht.

Cities have always been arenas of social and symbolic conflict. As places of encounter between different classes, ethnic groups, and lifestyles, cities play the role of powerful integrators; yet on the other hand urban contexts are the ideal setting for marginalization and violence. The struggle over control of urban spaces is an ambivalent mode of sociation: while producing themselves, groups produce exclusive spaces and then, in turn, use the boundaries they have created to define themselves. This volume presents major urban conflicts and analyzes modes of negotiation against the theoretical background of postcolonialism.
