Handbook of Regulatory Authorities (Hardcover): Martino Maggetti, Fabrizio Di Mascio, Alessandro Natalini Handbook of Regulatory Authorities (Hardcover)
Martino Maggetti, Fabrizio Di Mascio, Alessandro Natalini
R6,633 Discovery Miles 66 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Featuring a comprehensive analytical collection of interdisciplinary research on regulatory authorities, this innovative Handbook presents the fundamental concepts, theories, practices, and empirical achievements and challenges in the contemporary study of regulatory authorities. Opening with a comparative overview of regulators across global regions, regulatory sectors, and regulatory types, the Handbook discusses the key regulatory conceptual issues of independence, politicization, and quality. Contributions from leading scholars and regulatory practitioners provide cutting-edge research on reputation, performance, and control in regulatory authorities. Chapters combine foundational theoretical concepts with empirical research to consider the emerging advances, challenges, and questions in the field, while also giving weight to critical examinations of complex and underexplored issues in research on regulatory authorities. Forward-thinking, the Handbook concludes by expanding its focus to analyse behavioural insights, innovation, agenda-setting, and new frontiers in regulation. With a cross-disciplinary approach, this all-encompassing Handbook will prove invaluable for students and scholars of politics, law, and economics with a regulatory governance perspective. Global in scope, it will be an essential point of reference for policy analysts, practitioners, and policymakers working in regulation and regulatory authorities.

Comparative Politics - Theoretical and Methodological Challenges (Hardcover): Dietmar Braun, Martino Maggetti Comparative Politics - Theoretical and Methodological Challenges (Hardcover)
Dietmar Braun, Martino Maggetti
R2,900 Discovery Miles 29 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume breaks new ground in addressing a number of critical issues confronting contemporary comparative politics, including the increasing interdependence of countries in the era of enhanced globalization, different levels of political authority and structures of governance, the search for elegant parsimonious explanation and the possibilities for a real accumulation of knowledge. The contributions all problematize comparative politics in ways that have not been done before and add remarkable insight for scholars in the field. This is highly recommended.' - Todd Landman, University of Nottingham, UK and author of Issues and Methods in Comparative Politics (Routledge 2000, 2003, 2008, 2016)'The challenges that comparative politics faces have, in most cases, been discussed as fragmented and separate treatments. Rarely are they presented systematically and in an encompassing manner, as in the present volume, which covers a variety of subdisciplines. The editors and contributors should be complimented for offering methodologists and empirical comparativists a structured and integrated volume in which the various challenges are not only discussed in depth, but also linked together, rather than in isolation.' - Daniele Caramani, University of Zurich, Switzerland What are the conceptual and methodological challenges facing comparative politics today? This informative book discusses four main challenges that create stress for disciplinary reproduction and advancement, while providing potential solutions. In seven chapters, the contributors cover the most pressing issues: the dissolution of the nation-state as the main objective of inquiry; the increasing complexity of concepts and methods; the capacity to accumulate knowledge; and the tensions between parsimonious and contextually rich explanations. Scholars and students of comparative politics, international relations and political science will be interested in the up-to-date overview of pertinent conceptual problems, as well as the possible ways forward. Practitioners and decision-makers will find the real-world examples provided in this book useful to their work. Contributors: D. Braun, O.Giraud, D. Jahn, D. Kuebler, M. Maggetti, S. Stephan

Rethinking Participation in Global Governance - Voice and Influence after Stakeholder Reforms in Global Finance and Health... Rethinking Participation in Global Governance - Voice and Influence after Stakeholder Reforms in Global Finance and Health (Hardcover)
Joost Pauwelyn, Martino Maggetti, Tim Buthe, Ayelet Berman
R3,224 Discovery Miles 32 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

International organizations and other global governance bodies often make rules and decisions without input from many of the individuals, groups, firms, and governments that are affected by them. The standards of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, for instance, developed by a small number of states, govern financial markets and the safety of bank deposits in over a hundred jurisdictions. Historically, the interests of developing countries, as well as non-commercial and diffuse interests within countries, have been excluded or disregarded in global governance. Scholars and practitioners have criticised this democratic deficit and called for greater participation of such marginalized stakeholders. Against this background, international institutions have introduced a variety of reforms with the goal of increasing and facilitating the participation of these excluded stakeholders. This book brings together an expert group of scholars and practitioners to investigate the consequences of stakeholder participation reforms in the global governance of health and finance: What reforms have been introduced? Have these reforms given previously marginalized stakeholders a voice in global governance bodies? What effect have these reforms had on the legitimacy and effectiveness of global governance? To answer these questions, the book examines treaty-based intergovernmental organizations alongside newer forms of global governance such as trans-governmental regulatory networks, multi-stakeholder partnerships, and private standard setting bodies. Through a series of paired comparative analyses, the book provides insights into the experiences of large emerging and smaller or lower income developing countries (Brazil v. Argentina, China v. Vietnam, India v. the Philippines) in a diverse set of organizations, including the World Bank and the World Health Organization, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the International Accounting Standards Board, Codex Alimentarius Commission and more.

Regulation in Practice - The de facto Independence of Regulatory Agencies (Paperback, New): Martino Maggetti Regulation in Practice - The de facto Independence of Regulatory Agencies (Paperback, New)
Martino Maggetti
R1,322 Discovery Miles 13 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book develops and applies an inventive theoretical approach, which combines different levels of analysis and activates a wide range of methods, to the comparative study of an important point that had been neglected so far, namely the real (or "de facto") independence of regulatory agencies. The first part of the book examines the organizational and institutional factors shaping de facto independence of regulatory agencies in Western Europe. Second, the role of independent regulatory agencies in the policy-making process is investigated, using de facto independence as an explanatory variable. The third part is devoted to the relations between regulatory agencies and the news media. In the conclusive discussion, the author also tackles a set of normative questions, which relates to the virtues and perils of independence.
