The history of the world consists mainly of the stories of the
lives of certain men and women whose deeds have been of sufficient
importance to make them worth relating. The lives of some persons
have been worth narrating because of their abounding in deeds of
great merit, such as the lives of Washington, Gladstone, Frances E.
Willard, and Joan of Arc. The lives of others have been thought
worth narrating because of their great wickedness, as the lives of
Nero and Queen Mary of England. But the church too has a history.
This history differs from the history of the world, in that it does
not record merely the doings of man, but the workings of God
through man as his instruments. God is a jealous God who manifests
himself only through those who are willing to give him all the
glory. Hence not many names of the wise, powerful, talented men of
the earth have been enrolled on the history of the church, since
they were not humble enough to submit fully into God's hands. In
the church truly this scripture has been proved: "God has used the
weak things of the world to confound the mighty."

This book (hardcover) is part of the TREDITION CLASSICS. It
contains classical literature works from over two thousand years.
Most of these titles have been out of print and off the bookstore
shelves for decades. The book series is intended to preserve the
cultural legacy and to promote the timeless works of classical
literature. Readers of a TREDITION CLASSICS book support the
mission to save many of the amazing works of world literature from
oblivion. With this series, tredition intends to make thousands of
international literature classics available in printed format again
- worldwide.
Adolescents Rewrite their Worlds: Using Literature to Illustrate
Writing Forms offers alternative ways teachers can engage young
adolescents with the writing process using literature. The
contributors discuss the values of writing in twenty-first-century
classrooms and global societies, remarking that writing is first a
personal exploration that is informed by cultural practices.
Therefore culture is quite central in how we approach, explore, and
express through any medium. The chapters consider ways to motivate
students to become critically-conscious and active writers who are
aware of their surrounding world, and the competing multiple
discourses in which they are positioned. This requires intimate
knowledge of audience, purpose, and genre and/or writing forms. We
provide practical advice for teachers who wish to guide their
students toward these goals. Additional features of this book
include: *Authors/Contributors' professional experiences of
teaching writing using literature *Practical pedagogical practices
that may transform the way teachers teach writing and use
literature *Interviews with authors that give insight into their
writing process *Writing practices for twenty-first-century
adolescents using new literacies

This volume gives intellectual space to a range of current
perspectives on classroom discourse research and provides a forum
for conversations about the research process. Classroom discourse
researchers from different theoretical perspectives provide five
separate analyses of the same instructional unit in a high school
biology class, using the same set of data. Interwoven with the five
research reports are several conversations among the editors and
researchers regarding specific aspects of the research process.
These conversations illuminate some of the actual decisions that
researchers make when looking at data and crafting their
analyses.
This book is intended for graduate students, researchers, and
teacher educators across the fields of applied linguistics and
education who are interested in studying classroom discourse and,
more generally, language-in-use. With its focus on both the
research process and the outcomes of research, as well as on the
theory-method relationship, this book is relevant for courses in
research methodology, language in education, applied linguistics,
discourse analysis, language development, and multiculturalism in
the classroom.
This catalog includes introductory essays about the life and work
of the Shropshire novelist and poet, Mary Webb (1881-1927), as well
as synopses of her novels. Webb's work is explored in depth through
over 180 items, many of which are Webb's original manuscripts and
typescripts. Dr. Gladys Mary Coles, Webb's biographer and author of
The Flower of Light, contributes the foreword, and an essay, Mary
Webb--A Modern Writer. Included as a second volume is a special
edition of Webb's hitherto unpublished juvenile work Clematisa
& Percival, printed letterpress on imported mould-made paper,
with six full color tip-ins of artwork by Bill Bisphop created
specially for this publication.
