Part One of Montesquieu's Idea of Justice comprises a survey of the
currency in philosophical, ethical and aesthetic debate during the
second half of the 17th century of the terms rapport and
convenance, which are central to the enigmatic definition given to
justice by Mon tesquieu in Lettres Persanes LXXXllI. In this
survey, attention is concen trated on the way in which the
connotations of these terms fluctuate with the divergent
development of the methodological and speculative outgrowths of
Cartesian ism into two schools of thought, materialist and
idealist, often widely at variance in their views of the nature and
orga nization of the universe. In Part Two, Montesquieu's
definition of justice is set against this background, whose
doctrinal conflicts, because of the characteristic as sociations of
its key terms, it may be taken to reflect, just as it may be held
to epitomize, by virtue of its elaboration in the opening chapter
of De l' Esprit des Lois and its close terminological affinities
with the defini tion of law there given, an undoubtedly related
conflict between the implications of causal determinism and the
aspirations of idealist meta physics surviving at the heart of
Montesquieu's outlook, and, remaining unresolved, often said to
impair the coherence if not the validity of his theory of society.
At first, expecting her new job to be easy, Jade Darcy is oblivious
to the religious strife wracking the world of Restaapa. Jade and
Megan Cafferty, her employer, discover that the Restaapans are in
the process of choosing a new heir to the throne. During this
process, the candidates hatch plots against anyone they see as a
danger to their victory. Each one of them will go to any extreme,
even murder, to assure his election as Restaapa's heir. Jade and
Megan are pegged as threats that must be eliminated. And Jade has
the difficult task of restoring order to Restaapa as well as
protecting her own life.
PREFACE. THIS work was first designed and undertaken at the earnest
solicitations of two young ladies who were about to enter upon the
important duties of married life, and, at their suggestion, the
book proposed was to serve as a Counsellor, from the outset of
their career, through all the various arrangements of a
well-regulated household. This, doubtless, my readers will say was
a very daring and difficult undertaking. And so indeed it was. Yet
when the motives are weighed, the writer cannot but hope her
lenient judges will be inclined to view the undertaking as more the
result of affectionate solicitude than that of presumption or
conceit. By the critical eye of numerous superiors in this
important branch of human knowledge, no doubt many omissions,
mistakes, and imperfections will be discovered: these, she trusts,
will be excused for the sake of her motives. If this book should
prove the happy Counsellor of one successful housewife, the writer
will consider herself well rewarded for her pains. Having been
written expressly for the benefit of residents of the Southern
States, before emancipation, the advice respecting the management
of servants may appear unsuitable in some degree for those who are
non-residents: nevertheless it will be easy to make allowance for
these different circumstances when the above fact is borne in mind,
so that the writer sees no necessity for altering the original
directions. The culinary receipts of this book are all tried and
long-practiced receipts, and the writer has taken pains to select
them from a more multitudinous list, so as to have them the best
and most approved. Her endeavor has been to make her directions
perfectly intelligible, unmistakable, and exact, so that no one may
say the whole process is not understood of any one receipt. If she
fails in this, it will not be from indifference or want of honest
endeavor. And be well assured, most indulgent reader, that no
efforts will be spared to render the Counsellor so useful and
faithful a friend to every young housewife that no bridegroom in
the land will think it possible to complete his number of bridal
presents till he has included this book among them.

A wonderful guide full of recipes for making preserves from fruit
and vegetables at home. Many of the earliest books, particularly
those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce
and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works
in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original
text and artwork.
