Third Edition, Fully Updated and Expanded There is hope, there is
relief, there is another way to treat Alzheimer’s disease! More
than 6.5 million people in the United States suffer from
Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Mary T.
Newport’s husband, Steve, was one of them. In Alzheimer’s
Disease: What If There Was a Cure?, Dr. Newport shares Steve’s
story—how he fell into the abyss that is Alzheimer’s disease
and was able to climb back out to enjoy a nearly four-year reprieve
from the disease, thanks to a dietary intervention with coconut oil
and MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil. Since Steve’s remarkable
turnaround from early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2008, Dr. Newport has
communicated with hundreds of people and their caregivers dealing
with neurodegenerative diseases. In addition to detailing the most
recent research on the links between Alzheimer’s and many common
medications, Dr. Newport illustrates how infection, inflammation,
and genetic makeup may affect an individual’s response to
fatty-acid therapy. She also covers the recent advances in imaging
technologies, which have made it possible to detect subtle changes
in the brain a decade or more before a person develops obvious
symptoms, giving at-risk individuals the opportunity to take
preventive measures. While the cause of Alzheimer’s disease is
not known, Dr. Newport’s research offers a message of hope and
shows how adopting certain lifestyle changes could prevent, delay,
or otherwise alter the course of the disease.

Mary T. Newport, M.D., a neonatal practitioner, has become an authority on Alzheimer's disease over the last ten years. In the course of researching scientific literature about Alzheimer's, she discovered studies involving medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and their natural source, coconut oil. That's when a lightbulb went on, and the doctor connected the dots between using MCT oil in newborn's formula to help babies thrive and using it to address Alzheimer's disease. After writing two well-received editions of Alz heimer's Disease: What If There Was a Cure? The Story of Ketones, Dr. Newport has now written this quick-start guide on how to integrate these life-restoring fatty acids into the diet. In addition to Alzheimer's disease, this dietary treatment can be used to counter other neurodegenerative diseases such as non-Alzheimer's dementias, Parkinson's, ALS, and multiple sclerosis. Dr. Newport was not the first to call Alzheimer's "a type of diabetes of the brain," but she firmly believes it is. Areas in the brain that test positive for Alzheimer's show insulin deficiency and resistance, which cause decreased glucose uptake in the cells, leading to cell malfunction and cell death. Because diet is the most important way to counter diabetes, Dr. Newport advocates a dietary intervention based on a whole-food, high-fat, lowcarbohydrate diet. To make the dietary change easy, Dr. Newport provides six choices that can be used alone or in combination for integrating coconut and MCT oils into the diet. Dr. Newport is one of the world's strongest advocates for preventing and reversing neurological diseases of the brain. Her role in advancing a simple dietary intervention has already gone a long way toward changing the lives of both patients and caregivers.
Though Dr. Mary T. Newport has provided professional care to
newborns since 1983, she's led a double life since 2000 when she
became a caregiver at home. That's when her beloved husband, Steve,
first showed signs of Alzheimer's disease. After his deterioration
accelerated in 2004, Dr. Newport began avidly researching ways to
keep him functional for as long as possible. Since she understands
medical terminology and scientific methods, she was thrilled to
find new research showing that medium- chain fatty acids, which act
like an alternative fuel in the insulin-deficient Alzheimer's
brain, can sometimes reverse or at least stabilize the disease.
When she gave Steve about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (a source of
these fats) at breakfast before a memory test that he had
previously failed, Steve miraculously passed the test. Since then,
Steve continues to maintain improvement while taking daily doses of
coconut oil and MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil with meals. Dr.
Newport's story of Steve's reprieve from Alzheimer's provides hope
for caregivers eager to learn about readily available fatty acids
in foods that may reverse the ravages of this dreaded disease.
Changes in loved ones may take many forms, including improved
memory, return of personality, resumption of activities and social
interaction, and relief from certain physical symptoms. Because
ketone esters, a synthesized form of these powerful fatty acids,
work faster and more comprehensively than fatty acids in foods, Dr.
Newport has become an ardent advocate for ketone ester research,
with FDA approval her final goal. Caregivers for the more than 5
million people in the United States who suffer from Alzheimer's
disease are searching desperately for hope, relief, and a cure.
They will find all that in this book that summarizes Dr. Newport's
research and Steve's reprieve, the importance of medium-chain fatty
acids, and how Alzheimer's patients can make the transition to a
healthy diet rich in these vital fats.
