Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

White Women Writing White is a provocative analysis of the works of selected South African women writers, examining the ways in which each deals with concepts of white identity. Drawing on a range of source materials, from popular novels (Pamela Jooste and Susan Mann) and magazine columns (Marianne Thamm) to major works such as A Change of Tongue (Antjie Krog) and short stories by Nadine Gordimer and Marlene van Niekerk, this book seeks to tease out the
hidden meanings and assumptions in the ways these writers have portrayed the white South African experience.
White Women Writing White is an important addition to the internationally growing field of whiteness studies, which views white identity as a social construct. In this respect, the title also reflects a particular current in post-colonial studies; instead of subjecting the Other to detailed analysis, this line of study examines the often unspoken assumption that whiteness is the norm by which all experiences are measured.
Although primarily aimed at an academic readership, this forceful and thought-provoking book is sure to interest anyone with an eye on developments and critical perspectives in South African literature.
This practical guide to mural painting explains all the key
techniques and design styles you need so that you can get creative
in your own home and start 'unsaming' your walls. Murals are a
fantastic way to breathe new life into an interior or exterior
space. Mural painting is perfect for creating a particular theme in
a room, livening up a boring corner of your home and personalising
a child's bedroom with their favourite characters. It can also be
used to spruce up corridors, hallways and stairwells and other
areas of our homes which often get forgotten about. This practical
guide to mural painting explains all the essential techniques for
getting started including what kind of paints and brushes to use,
how to work on various wall surfaces and how to prepare the surface
area before painting in order to get the best results. Authors
Clara Wilkinson and Mary West, outline the practicalities you need
to consider when you are planning a mural such as how much light
the area receives and how will it fit in the desired space. They
also look at where to find inspiration sources, how to use colour
in your work and how different styles of painting suit certain
locations. One of the most challenging elements to creating a mural
is how to transfer your ideas from paper onto a wall or ceiling and
how to 'scale up' the design. The authors explore various
techniques for transferring mural designs including the traditional
grid method and their own innovative 'doodle grid' method. Murals
offer an exciting opportunity to try out different styles of
painting: abstract graphic, painterly and linear are all styles
that are looked at in this collection. These painting techniques
are explored using step-by-step photography and there is advice on
how to combine different techniques to create stunning results. The
authors take us on a tour of some of their most exciting wall art
and murals and explain, using step-by-step instructions and
photography, how you can achieve similar results by either using
their design templates or learning how to create your own. Each of
these projects is based on a particular theme including
Chinoisserie, graphic botanical, celestial, tropical jungle, linear
abstract, florals and a painterly abstract design. Just choose your
favourite and get started!
This is the first book to systematically describe the range of
approaches used in music imagery and Guided Imagery and Music
across the lifespan, from young children through to palliative care
with older people. Covering a broad spectrum of client populations
and settings, international contributors present various
adaptations of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery to accommodate
factors such as time restraints, context (including hospitals,
schools, and the wider community), client symptomology, and the
increasing use of more contemporary music. Each chapter presents a
different model and includes background information on the client
group, the type of approach, elements of approach (including length
of the session, choice of music, verbal interventions during the
music, and discussion of the experience), and theoretical
orientation and intention. A nomenclature for the range of
approaches is also included. This information will be a valued
guide for both practitioners and students of Guided Imagery and
Music and receptive methods of music therapy.
