This is the first book to document the highly innovative Terminal 3
at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport in China, scheduled for
completion in 2013. Shenzhen is one China's most important
industrial locations as well as a very popular tourist destination.
The fast developing city is located in the south of the Guangdong
Province, neighboring the Pearl River delta and Hong Kong. In 2008
the Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas (M Fuksas)
won the international competition for the extension of the airport
with the design of Terminal 3. The book contains never-before-seen
sketches, models, renderings, drawings, and all-new photography of
the building, as well as an interview with the architect.
Collaborating with Fuksas is the engineering firm Knipper Helbig,
who contributes an essay on the engineering and structural approach
of the project. The design of the terminal, which resembles an
airplane from above, caters to the passengers' needs while taking
account environmental and socio-economic factors. The sculptural,
organically shaped steel structure incorporates an innovative
two-layer honeycomb skin which reduces energy consumption and
allows natural light to permeate the space. Specifically designed
to make the most effective use of local resources and built by
local contractors, Shenzhen is the first airport terminal certified
to the National Green Building Star Label in China
Massimiliano Fuksas (*Rome, 1944) is a major international
architect with offices in Rome, Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt and China.
For many years he has dedicated special attention to the study of
urban problems and, in particular, to the suburbs. Four key
considerations drive his work: community, culture, spirituality and
peace. Some of his major works include the Maison des Arts in
Bordeaux, the research centre for Ferrari in Maranello, the Milan
Trade Fair, the Zenith Music Hall in Strasbourg and the Peres
Centre for Peace in Israel. He is also a professor at several
universities and has published widely. In 2000, he directed the VII
Venice Biennale of Architecture titled Less Aesthetics, More
Ethics.
After New Trade Fair Milan and Frames, Actar publishes a new and
valuable book that compiles high-quality photographs of his major
works and never-released sketches and drawings conceived by this
multi-faceted mind. The visual content will be accompanied by
several interviews with renowned contributors.
Once heavily industrial and polluted, the current site of the New
Milan Trade by architect Massimiliano Fuksas has been converted
into an iconic new destination. Nearly 1.5 km in length, the New
Milan Trade fair is much more than a simple building. The various
conventional halls, retail areas, offices, and administrative
buildings are united by the great central canopy, a swirling and
undulating sail that floats aboveground, creating a spectacular
vision in the Milan skyline. Through a detailed set of construction
drawings, panoramic photography, and short texts, the book of the
Milan Trade Fair is a journey itself: join us for a stroll into the
well-known and unknown aspects of this building, which is more a
city than a solitary structure.
