This book constitutes the proceedings of the BPM Forum held during the 16th International Conference on Business Process Management, BPM 2018, which took place in Sydney, Australia, in September 2018. The BPM Forum hosts innovative research which has a high potential of stimulating discussions. The papers selected for the forum are expected to showcase fresh ideas from exciting and emerging topics in BPM, even if they are not yet as mature as the regular papers at the conference. The 14 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 113 submissions. They were organized according to the tracks of the conference: foundations; engineering; management.

Business process management is usually treated from two different perspectives: business administration and computer science. While business administration professionals tend to consider information technology as a subordinate aspect in business process management for experts to handle, by contrast computer science professionals often consider business goals and organizational regulations as terms that do not deserve much thought but require the appropriate level of abstraction.

Matthias Weske argues that all communities involved need to have a common understanding of the different aspects of business process management. To this end, he details the complete business process lifecycle from the modeling phase to process enactment and improvement, taking into account all different stakeholders involved. After starting with a presentation of general foundations and abstraction models, he explains concepts like process orchestrations and choreographies, as well as process properties and data dependencies. Finally, he presents both traditional and advanced business process management architectures, covering, for example, workflow management systems, service-oriented architectures, and data-driven approaches. Service-oriented computing has recently gained extensive momentum in both industry and academia, and major software vendors hook on to the service paradigm and tailor their software systems towards services in order to accommodate ever-changing process and product requirements in today's dynamic market environments. While dynamic binding of services at runtime was identified as a core functionality of service-based environments as far back as 2000, its industrial-strength implementation has yet to be achieved. The main reason for this is the lack of rich service specifications, concepts, and tools to process them.

This book introduces advanced concepts in service provisioning and service engineering, including semantic concepts, dynamic discovery and composition, and illustrates them in a concrete business use case scenario. To prove the validity of the concepts and technologies, a semantic service provisioning reference architecture framework as well as a prototypical implementation of its subsystems and a prototypical realization of a proper business scenario are presented. Thus the book goes way beyond current service-based software technologies by providing a coherent and consistent set of technologies and systems functionality that realizes advanced concepts in service provisioning.

Both the use case scenario and the provisioning platform have already been substantiated and implemented by the EU-funded Adaptive Services Grid project. The book therefore presents state-of-the-art research results that have already passed a real industrial implementation evaluation which is based on the work of over 20 European partners cooperating in the field of semantic service provisioning.

The Workshop on Approaches and Architectures for Web Data Integration and Mining in Life Sciences (WebDIM4LS 2007) focuses on the effective and efficient management and transformation of scientific data in the life sciences. The Collaborative Knowledge Management for Web Information Systems workshop (WEKnow 2007) discusses issues related to information acquisition through collaborative Web crawling, classification, and clustering. Methods and techniques to support governance and compliance in Web information systems are considered in the Governance, Risk and Compliance in Web Information Systems workshop (GDR 2007). The Human-friendly (Web) Service Description, Discovery and Matchmaking workshop (Hf-SDDM 2007) focuses on annotations of services that facilitates service requestors to easily find and use them. Models and mechanisms for personalization as well as personalized access and context acquisition are discussed in the Personalized Access to Web Information workshop (PAWI 2007). In the Web Usability and Accessibility workshop (IWWUA 2007) concepts, models and languages to improve Web information systems with respect to their usability and accessibility are investigated.

In recent years the management of business processes has emerged as one of the major developments to ease the understanding of, communication about, and evolution of process-oriented information systems in a variety of appli- tion domains. Based on explicit representations of business processes, process stakeholders can communicate about process structure, content, and possible improvements. Formal analysis, veri?cation and simulation techniques have the potential to show de?cits and to e?ectively lead to better and more ?exible processes. Process mining facilitates the discovery of process speci?cations from process logs that are readily available in many organizations. This volume of Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains the papers presented at the 2nd International Conference on Business Process M- agement (BPM 2004) which took place in Potsdam, Germany, in June 2004. BPMN promises to bridge business and IT, and brings process design and implementation closer together. BPMN 2010 was the second workshop of the series. It took place October 13-14, 2010 at the Hasso Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam, Germany. This volume contains six contributed research papers that were - lected from 16 submissions. There was a thorough reviewing process, with each paper being reviewed by, on average, four Program Committee members. In addition to the contributed papers, these proceedings contain three short - pers and three extended abstracts of the invited keynote talks. Welcome to the 8th International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC 2010), held in San Francisco, December 2010. These proceedings rep- sent high-quality research and industry papers, tutorials, demos, and posters that showcase new developments in service oriented computing and related ?elds. Since the ?rst meeting in beautiful Trento in 2003, ICSOC has become the premier conference in the rapidly evolving areas of service research. While ke- ing its roots in scienti?c excellence and technical depth of service technology, ICSOC 2010 aimed to combine technical aspects of service computing with - plication and business-oriented aspects of service design, following the recent emergence of service science as an interdisciplinary foundation for understa- ing and integrating service systems. Located in the center of technology inno- tion,the SanFranciscoBayArea,this year'sICSOC,throughits LocalAdvisory Board, reached out to local industry and academia for keynotes and panels on current topics and to connect technical invention with commercial innovation. The Program Committee faced some tough decisions this year. We received 238submissions,signallingagrowingcommunityofresearchersandpractitioners working in this multidisciplinary ?eld. All papers were considered carefully by the Program Committee in originality, novelty, rigor, and relevance. In the end, 33 full research papers and three full industry papers were selected, resulting in an acceptance rate of 15%. An additional 18 submissions were accepted as short papers. There were also three PhD symposium posters and four regular postersaccepted.Paperandposterpresentationswerecomplementedbytutorial and demo programs. All represented the state of the art in service oriented computing.
