This is a longitudinal study that treats the trajectory of ethical discoveries about the European representation of world peoples across more than one hundred and fifty years (1860-2010). This study integrates literary representation and visual representations of world peoples—images—to show in greater detail how trends of the portrayal of race and culture are manifest across artistic and scientific genres. This study integrates the history of anthropology, trends in current anthropological research, and literary representation to argue for a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the French history of the representation of world peoples. This study argues that subjectivity and objectivity are interdependent terms, and that out of this interdependence, a phenomenon called ethnographic aesthetics. This study argues that the anthropological dispositif emerged in the colonial-modern era and has shaped the French representation of world peoples through tropes, ideology, observational practice, and discursive clichés inherent in proto-anthropological and modern anthropological thinking from the nineteenth century to today.

Selected Satire: Fifty Years of Ignorance brings together about 20 satire pieces of eminent Hindi writer, Shrilal Shukla. Most noted for his novel Raag Darbari, for which he received the Sahitya Akademi Award, Shukla also wrote several collections of satirical essays and short stories. The pieces in this volume include his socio-political and cultural satires, where he caricaturizes politicians, mocks the bureaucracy (many of whom were his friends), and picks on the so-called developmental schemes of the government. A couple of pieces are also about small town attitudes and pretentions of intellectuals. The overall flavour is of an irreverence to authority and humour drawn from everyday occurrences.

Offered here in English for the first time, his long poem from 1976, Le lutteur de classe a la maniere taoiste is a wildly inventive, transgressive, and important text. Class Warrior delivers a kind of free-verse Marxist handbook, written with the energy, movement, and style of a highly idiosyncratic Taoism. Matt Reeck's compelling translation captures the stylistic and thematic beats of Khatibi's verse, rendering the deceptively simple language of the original without losing its extraordinary layers and complexities. The introduction provides biographical context and an overview of Khatibi's poetics of the orphan, a subject position that seeks to avoid authenticating notions of origins and that is also constantly restless and forever questing.
