Reading of Shang Inscriptions (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Kuang Yu Chen, Zhenhao Song, Yuan Liu, Matthew Anderson Reading of Shang Inscriptions (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Kuang Yu Chen, Zhenhao Song, Yuan Liu, Matthew Anderson
R3,156 Discovery Miles 31 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book introduces readers to oracle bone inscriptions (OBI), the oldest known form of Chinese writing. It presents 120 rubbings made from unearthed animal bones and turtle shells that the Shang royal court employed to record royal divinations 3500 years ago, covering topics ranging from ancestor worship, rituals, and astronomy to agriculture, war, and hunting. Each rubbing is accompanied by a graph-to-graph transcription, a translation and a detailed annotation. The book is intended for both general readers and scholars who are interested in ancient civilizations and Early China in particular, acquainting them not only with OBI graphs and the development of the Chinese writing system, but also the history of the Shang Dynasty. The didactic and tutorial format makes this book ideal for teaching and for self-learning. Sumerian, Egyptian, Chinese OBI and Mayan constitute the four pristine writing systems. Of these, only Chinese writing has remained logographic and survived to the present day. The study of OBI not only plays a pivotal role in connecting archaeology to history, but is also of great importance to the comparative study of the origin of writing and civilization. Though there are numerous books on Mayan and Egyptian hieroglyphs, there are very few on OBI; this book fills that gap.

Law and the Humanities - An Introduction (Paperback): Austin Sarat, Matthew Anderson, Cathrine O. Frank Law and the Humanities - An Introduction (Paperback)
Austin Sarat, Matthew Anderson, Cathrine O. Frank
R1,463 Discovery Miles 14 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Law and the Humanities: An Introduction brings together a distinguished group of scholars from law schools and an array of the disciplines in the humanities. Contributors come from the United States and abroad in recognition of the global reach of this field. This book is, at one and the same time, a stock taking both of different national traditions and of the various modes and subjects of law and humanities scholarship. It is also an effort to chart future directions for the field. By reviewing and analyzing existing scholarship and providing thematic content and distinctive arguments, it offers to its readers both a resource and a provocation. Thus, Law and the Humanities marks the maturation of this 'law and' enterprise and will spur its further development.

Toward a Critique of Guilt - Perspectives from Law and the Humanities (Hardcover): Matthew Anderson, Austin Sarat Toward a Critique of Guilt - Perspectives from Law and the Humanities (Hardcover)
Matthew Anderson, Austin Sarat
R4,180 Discovery Miles 41 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This special volume of "Studies in Law, Politics, and Society" takes up a subject of an enormous import for law and legal scholarship, Guilt. At the center of our belief in law is the hope and expectation that law can differentiate the guilty from the innocent. But as the articles in this volume show law's relationship to guilt is more complex and vexed than that. Law constitutes us as guilty subjects and law itself is a guilty subject. The articles in this volume explore law's guilt about literature, various domains in which bodies of guilt appear, and historical perspectives on the subject of guilt. Taken together they exemplify the way interdisciplinary scholarship opens up new questions and new avenues of inquiry about the social and cultural life of law.

The letters and diaries of three civil war soldiers from the 30th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. These writings give insight to what a soldier that served with this regiment experienced from the letters they wrote home and the diaries that was written as a personal record of their experience. David W. Poak was well educated and quite literate, Edward Grow and even more so Henry McLain wrote the words as they sounded to them. I tried to keep their spelling and punctuation as close to their written text as possible so the reader can get a better feel for the soldier himself. This is a book for those who are familiar with the Civil War and are looking to expand their knowledge from the soldier's perspective.
