This book considers a crucial moment in the development of English
higher education, and also provides a new and comprehensive history
of the early decades of Durham University. During the Age of Reform
innovative ideas about the role and purpose of a university were
moving at an unprecedented pace. Proposals for new institutions in
all parts of the country were developing quickly and resulted in
the foundation of Durham University, London University (later
re-styled University College, London), and King's College, London.
While normally overshadowed by the London institutions, this book
demonstrates not only that Durham attempted to produce a far
broader institution than any historian has given its founders
credit for, but that a remarkable attempt at a third-way in English
higher education has been neglected. Matthew Andrews therefore not
only provides the first fully researched account of this important
national institution since 1932, but also carefully situates Durham
in its contemporary context, and alongside the two other most
prominent emerging institutions of that time.

This series helps students and teachers following the Cambridge AS
& A Level Thinking Skills syllabus (9694) for examination from
2020. Universities and employers have high expectations for 21st
century learners. They want students who can think critically,
collaborate efficiently and produce creative solutions to problems.
With more practice questions than the previous edition, this
coursebook provides opportunities for students to improve both
their critical thinking and problem solving skills. It walks
students through different scenarios - such as drawing conclusions
from arguments - explaining the thinking process involved and
helping to increase confidence when thinking independently.
Suggested answers to the coursebook questions are in the teacher's
resource.
Why is Frisco, Texas, the fastest growing town in America? Why is
Dallas the fastest growing city in America? Why are the largest
American and international companies moving headquarters to Texas?
The answers are simple—Dallas Got It Right! This dynamic new book
by Sam Wyly, co-authored by Laurie Matthews and Andrew Wyly, offers
new insights into the many reasons Dallas feeds the world, out
produces the Middle East in oil and gas, and serves as an epicenter
for business management, technology and investment. Wyly’s
“Dallas” goes north to Colorado Springs; east to Jackson,
Mississippi; south to Aggie Land; and west to White Sands. Dallas
Got It Right! is rich in history; entrepreneurial in spirit;
expansive in technology; unbounded by city limits. Built on cotton,
cows, oil, the military, computer technology, wholesaling and
retail, Sam reminds readers that, “My Dallas feeds the world. My
Dallas is the technology capital of the world. My Dallas is vital
to America’s military muscle.” Dallas Got It Right! shows
readers that Dallas goes beyond Elm Street and Main Street, made up
of many neighborhoods and characters. It’s a good place to live
and work.
In 2005, recent graduates Alex Herman, Paul Matthews, and Andrew
Feindel realized they werent entirely sure where they were going in
life. Then they had an idea. Over the next two years, they
interviewed 70 well-known Canadians and asked them how they got
started. The answers they found were not always what they expected.
Kickstart profiles over 30 prominent Canadians, including
professional athletes (former CFL star Norman Kwong), TV
personalities (Valerie Pringle), Native leaders (Matthew Coon
Come), and former prime ministers (Brian Mulroney). Their
collective wisdom, offered in their own words, just might help
readers "kickstart" their own lives and careers.
