This book aims to put the speciesism debate and the treatment of
non-human animals on the agenda of critical media studies and to
put media studies on the agenda of animal ethics researchers.
Contributors examine the convergence of media and animal ethics
from theoretical, philosophical, discursive, social
constructionist, and political economic perspectives. The book is
divided into three sections: foundations, representation, and
responsibility, outlining the different disciplinary approaches'
application to media studies and covering how non-human animals,
and the relationship between humans and non-humans, are represented
by the mass media, concluding with suggestions for how the media,
as a major producer of cultural norms and values related to
non-human animals and how we treat them, might improve such
representations.
Focusing on the socialization of the human use of other animals as
resources in contemporary Western society, this book explores the
cultural reproduction of human-nonhuman animal relations in
childhood. With close attention to the dominant practices through
which children encounter animals and mainstream representations of
animals in children's culture - whether in terms of the selective
exposure of children to animals as pets or as food in the home or
in school, or the representation of animals in mass media and
social media - Our Children and Other Animals reveals the
interconnectedness of studies of childhood, culture and
human-animal relations. In doing so it establishes the importance
of human-animal relations in sociology, by describing the
sociological importance of animals in children's lives and children
in animals' lives. Presenting a new typology of the various kinds
of human-animal relationship, this conceptually innovative book
constitutes a clear demonstration of the relevance of sociology to
the interdisciplinary field of human-animal relations and will
appeal to readers across the social sciences with interests in
sociology, childhood studies, cultural and media studies and
human-animal interaction.
A hard-hitting exposé of SEAL Team 6, the US military's best-known
brand, that reveals how the Navy SEALs were formed, then
sacrificed, in service of American empire. The Navy SEALs are, in
the eyes of many Americans, the ultimate heroes. When they killed
Osama Bin Laden in 2011, it was celebrated as a massive victory.
Former SEALs rake in cash as leadership consultants for
corporations, and young military-bound men dream of serving in
their ranks. But the SEALs have lost their bearings. Investigative
journalist Matthew Cole tells the story of the most lauded unit,
SEAL Team 6, revealing a troubling pattern of war crimes and the
deep moral rot beneath authorized narratives. From their origins in
World War II, the SEALs have trained to be specialized killers with
short missions. As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan became the
endless War on Terror, their violence spiraled out of control. Code
Over Country details the high-level decisions that unleashed the
SEALs' carnage and the coverups that prevented their crimes from
coming to light. It is a necessary and rigorous investigation of
the unchecked power of the military-and the harms enacted by and
upon soldiers in America's name.

University. After going through his senior year of high school

lot about. The cocky young man, with his flashy clothes and special
psychic abilities is confident that freshman year will be full of
success when facing the challenges ahead. As Colt will discover,
life has a way of throwing curve balls at the unsuspecting. He soon

girlfriend and his strait-and-narrow friend Bobby discovers that
partying is a fun occupation. When he starts to stimulate his

directions. He is forced to change and mature or face the

with a clear head and smart actions. But, it won't be easy.
Brett Sloan is out of school for summer vacation. The California
teenager envisions spending his time surfing, babe-watching and
taking it easy. Girls look sexier every day but Brett won't fall in
love. Girls are too hard to figure out and probably would control
his life. But, when he finds himself on the bad side of a bad dude,
and falling for a shy, pretty girl, life hits him like an enormous
wave. The physical and emotional thrashing will test him like never
before. Watch out Brett. Summer vacation may not be what you
expect.
Colt O'brien knows that he doesn't have to prove anything. He's the
savviest computer technician at Highline High in Burien,
Washington. When a PC is down, Colt is called in to save the day.
The short, energetic senior, with his bright, colorful attire and
cocky attitude, knows that he's the best. He expects the respect
that is showered upon him by peers and teachers. School will soon
be over and freedom beckons. No more girl friend to tell him what
to do. No more schoolwork to bore him to death. Colt is cruising
through senior year, but his life is about to be turned upside
down. Two freshman nerds start a computer class that will put
Highline High on the map and challenge Colt's credibility. Three
women will show him the meaning of love. One will show him the
meaning of hate. And, his hidden psychic powers will emerge when he
least expects them to. Hang on Colt.

In a world in which political opportunity and liberation seem far
away, the genre of science fiction grows in cultural importance and
popularity. The contributors to this collection are political and
social theorists from a range of disciplines who use science
fiction as inspiration for new theories and examples of speculative
politics. In dystopian governments, they find locations and forms
of resistance. Representations of Political Resistance and
Emancipation in Science Fiction explores a range of political and
social theoretical concerns for the twenty-first century.
Contributors analyze themes of post-humanism, resistance, agency,
political community making, and ethics and politics during the
Anthropocene.
