Savage Worlds - German Encounters Abroad, 1798-1914 (Paperback): Matthew Fitzpatrick, Peter Monteath Savage Worlds - German Encounters Abroad, 1798-1914 (Paperback)
Matthew Fitzpatrick, Peter Monteath
R926 Discovery Miles 9 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With an eye to recovering the experiences of those in frontier zones of contact, Savage Worlds maps a wide range of different encounters between Germans and non-European indigenous peoples in the age of high imperialism. Examining outbreaks of radical violence as well as instances of mutual co-operation, it examines the differing goals and experiences of German explorers, settlers, travellers, merchants and academics, and how the variety of projects they undertook shaped their relationship with the indigenous peoples they encountered. Examining the multifaceted nature of German interactions with indigenous populations, this volume offers historians and anthropologists clear evidence of the complexity of the colonial frontier and frontier zone encounters. It poses the question of how far Germans were able to overcome their initial belief that, in leaving Europe, they were entering 'savage worlds'. -- .

Colonialism, China and the Chinese - Amidst Empires (Paperback): Peter Monteath, Matthew Fitzpatrick Colonialism, China and the Chinese - Amidst Empires (Paperback)
Peter Monteath, Matthew Fitzpatrick
R1,282 Discovery Miles 12 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the place of China and the Chinese during the age of imperialism. Focusing not only on the state but also on the vitality of Chinese culture and the Chinese diaspora, it examines the seeming contradictions of a period in which China came under immense pressure from imperial expansion while remaining a major political, cultural and demographic force in its own right. Where histories of China commonly highlight episodes of conflict and subjugation in China's relations with the West, the contributions to this volume explore the complex spaces where empires and their peoples did not merely collide but also became entangled.

Twisted Fletches (Paperback): Matthew Fitzpatrick Twisted Fletches (Paperback)
Matthew Fitzpatrick
R477 Discovery Miles 4 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Twisted Fletches is about a lot of things that mysteriously intertwine in life. Many things in life go un-noticed to the majority of people, and they live dumbly to those things. It was written to inform people in a sense, while in other words it is horrific story of everyday evils occuring behind closed doors. The book mainly is about a decent man's life being denied by a certain group of individuals. While they use his influences to their own gains, they mysteriously cause many rejections or roadblocks to alter his life to a level of miserable deniance. He is a great and valuable person, but throughout all his days they continue to use his life to make their own appear better. Personally, writting the book seemed to create a wonderful little television episode like the one hour shows that run five days a week. The situations may never end, and there may be no sign of justice to become. The story could have been a little more elaborated, however that is an entirely different book in the making.
