Nietzsche and the Politics of Reaction - Essays on Liberalism, Socialism, and Aristocratic Radicalism (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Nietzsche and the Politics of Reaction - Essays on Liberalism, Socialism, and Aristocratic Radicalism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Matthew McManus
R4,705 Discovery Miles 47 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is intended as a major interdisciplinary contribution to the study of Nietzsche's thought in particular, and the political right more generally. Historically the assessment of Nietzsche's politics has ranged from denouncing him as a forerunner to Nazism to claiming he effectively did not have articulated political convictions. During the latter half of the 20th century he surprisingly became a major theoretical influence on a variety of post-structuralist radical critics, who saw in his perspectivism and genealogy of power useful tools to critique existent structures of domination. This collection of essays reframes the debate by looking at Nietzsche's constructive political project defending aristocratic values from the levelling influence of the herd and its liberal, socialist, and democratic spokesmen. The essays will also explore how this defense of aristocratic values continues to have an influence on the political right, inspiring moderates like Jordan Peterson and far right authors and activists like Aleksandr Dugin and Steve Bannon.

Liberalism and Socialism - Mortal Enemies or Embittered Kin? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Matthew McManus Liberalism and Socialism - Mortal Enemies or Embittered Kin? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Matthew McManus
R3,278 Discovery Miles 32 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In times of pandemic and global economic crisis, little more than a decade after the last, there are serious questions about how the liberal order can stand, who its friends are, and what the future will look like. This edited collection provides a comprehensive overview of the principles and stakes at play in the dispute between liberalism and socialism. It explores the 21st century appeal of socialism, particularly to millennials and other relatively young citizens, and shows why modern classical liberalism and neoliberalism have generated tepid support, leading to the resurgence of socialism after it was thought dead and buried due to the dramatic failures of statist models in 1989. The authors put modern socialism and liberalism into renewed dialogue with another to examine whether the two can coexist peacefully, or even reach an overlapping consensus on social reform going forward. It delves into the history and theory of both liberalism and socialism to determine points of overlap and tension, in addition to a cross-disciplinary interpretive analysis of the present epoch to determine how both traditions have evolved since the 20th century. The book is interdisciplinary and provides a broad array of perspectives including a diversity of ideological perspectives ranging from committed Marxists to libertarians. It will be of interest to academics and students in economics and contemporary political culture.

A Critical Legal Examination of Liberalism and Liberal Rights (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Matthew McManus A Critical Legal Examination of Liberalism and Liberal Rights (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Matthew McManus
R3,044 Discovery Miles 30 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book has two aims. First, to provide a critical legal examination of the liberal state and liberal rights in the law, and secondly, to present a systematic alternative to liberal approaches to both the law and rights, grounded in a left wing conception of human dignity. At the opening of the 21st century a remarkable thing happened. Liberalism, once considered the only doctrine left standing at the end of history, began to face renewed competition from both the political left and the post-modern conservative right. This book argues that the way forward is not to abandon, but to radicalize, the potential of the liberal project. Analysing major theoretical positions in order to build a critical genealogy of liberal rights, McManus lucidly develops a left wing alternative to the classic liberal approach to rights drawing on the traditions of liberal egalitarians and deliberative democracy theory. Societies, he argues, should be committed to advancing the human dignity of all through the enshrinement of certain rights into positive state law, the expansion of democracy and a resolute commitment to economic equality.

The Emergence of Post-modernity at the Intersection of Liberalism, Capitalism, and Secularism - The Center Cannot Hold... The Emergence of Post-modernity at the Intersection of Liberalism, Capitalism, and Secularism - The Center Cannot Hold (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Matthew McManus
R1,492 Discovery Miles 14 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a systematic and thorough analysis of what post-modernity is and how it emerged. It distinguishes between those who regard post-modernity as a theoretical approach and those who regard it as a culture, and argues that interpreting post-modernity as a culture is more fruitful. It discusses the three factors which led to its emergence, namely liberalism, capitalism, and secularism, highlighting their respective influence in generating the culture of post-modernity within neoliberal societies. The volume provides a lengthy analysis of neoliberal post-modernity in practice, arguing that post-modernism is the cultural condition of neoliberal societies in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Until recently it seemed that neoliberal post-modernity was here to stay, framed by relationship to freedom and time which stressed individual agency but precluded the possibility of historical change at the political level. However, the Great Recession of 2008 opened new spaces for agitation and transformation which has resulted in the discordant politics of the last decade. This book will be of interest to scholars working in a number of fields, including economic policy, cultural analysis, political theory, and social critique.

Matthew McManus
R2,725 Discovery Miles 27 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is designed as a timely analysis of the rise of post-modern conservatism in many Western countries across the globe. It provides a theoretical overview of post-modernism, why post-modern conservatism emerged, what distinguishes it from other variants of conservatism and differing political doctrines, and how post-modern conservatism governs in practice. First developing a unique genealogy of conservative thought, arguing that the historicist and irrationalist strains of conservatism were ripe for mutation into post-modern form under the right social and cultural conditions, then providing a new unique theoretical framework to describe the conditions for the emergence of post-modern conservatism, The Rise of Post-modern Conservatism applies its theoretical framework to a concrete analysis of the politics of the day. Ultimately, it aims to help us understand the emergence and rise of identity oriented alt right movements and their "populist" spokesmen particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Poland, and now Italy.

How To Guide to Cosmopolitan Socialism, A - A Tribute to Michael Brooks (Paperback): Matthew McManus How To Guide to Cosmopolitan Socialism, A - A Tribute to Michael Brooks (Paperback)
Matthew McManus
R418 Discovery Miles 4 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Socialism has always had internationalist ambitions, but what those ambitions should be and how to rethink them in the 21st century remain open questions. Before his tragic passing in 2020, Michael Brooks talked about a new kind of cosmopolitan socialism that would be appropriate for our time. A How To Guide To Cosmopolitan Socialism builds upon Brooks' vision to argue that we need a left which knows no boundaries and recognizes the fundamental moral equality of all individuals on the planet while securing the material conditions for their flourishing. Only such a sweeping vision can successfully combat the forces of reaction and violence confronting us today.

Making Human Dignity Central to International Human Rights Law - A Critical Legal Argument (Hardcover): Matthew McManus Making Human Dignity Central to International Human Rights Law - A Critical Legal Argument (Hardcover)

In recent years, there has been an explosion of writing on the topic of human dignity across a plethora of different academic disciplines. Despite this explosion of interest, there is one group - critical legal scholars - that has devoted little if any attention to human dignity. This book argues that these scholars should attend to human dignity, a concept rich enough to support a whole range of progressive ambitions, particularly in the field of international law. This book synthesizes certain liberal arguments about the good of self-authorship with the critical legal philosophy of Roberto Unger and the capabilities approach to agency of Amartya Sen, to formulate a unique conception of human dignity. The author argues how human dignity flows from an individual's capacity for self-authorship as defined by the set of expressive capabilities s/he possesses, and the book demonstrates how this conception can enrich our understanding of international human rights law by making the amplification of human dignity its fundamental orientation.
