Group Dynamics - Collectives of the Modernist Period (Paperback): Matthias Muhling Group Dynamics - Collectives of the Modernist Period (Paperback)
Matthias Muhling; Text written by Karin Althaus; Designed by magma design studio
R1,483 Discovery Miles 14 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Buenos Aires, Casablanca, Beijing, Khartoum, Lahore, Tokyo: all over the world, artists joined forces in collectives throughout the twentieth century. While the tendency to form groups was (and still is) universal, the concerns of their members, their aesthetic methodologies, political goals, and utopian aspirations differed fundamentally depending on time and place. The period from about 1900 to 1980 covered here coincides with the beginning of diverse international modernization movements and finally includes decolonization processes and the founding of new nations. These events were often accompanied by the establishment of art schools and collectives as well as the publication of programmatic texts and journals. The project is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation in conjunction with its Museum Global initiative. The catalogue accompanying the first part of the exhibition, Group Dynamics - The Blue Rider, also published by Hatje Cantz Verlag, is already available. It offers a comprehensive survey of works and new insights into the circle of artists who made up Der Blaue Reiter. Texts by: Karin Althaus, Sergio Baur, Susanne Boeller, Elisabeth Giers, Salah M. Hassan, Sarah Louisa Henn, Eva Huttenlauch, Samina Iqbal, Zehra Jumabhoy, Morad Montazami, Noriko Murai, Jaroslaw Suchan, Daniel Muzyczuk, Thiago Gil de Oliveira Virava, Iheanyi Onwuegbucha, Nadine Siegert, Aihe Wang, Stephanie Weber, Carol Yinghua Lu, et al.

Filled with the vibrant color that is the hallmark of Münter’s oeuvre, this dynamic consideration of the German painter offers a lively and detailed analysis of her life, work, and contributions to modern painting. While Münter is most often linked to Wassily Kandinsky and the Blue Rider movement, this book offers a refreshing appreciation of her work in its own right. Multifaceted, imaginative, and stylistically diverse, Münter’s creative output spanned genres to include portraits, landscapes, interiors, and abstractions. Beautifully reproduced images allow readers to marvel at Münter’s joyful vibrant hues, her bold brushstrokes and her experimental and innovative approach to painting. Lively texts offer important biographical insights into her artistic evolution and place her work in the broader context of modern art. Comprehensive and insightful, this newly formatted edition pays tribute to a hugely influential woman artist whose work is all too often overlooked.

The publication explores the diversity of the lives and destinies of artists during the Weimar Republic, under National Socialism, and until the inaugural documenta held in the young Federal Republic in 1955. Their works and biographies bear witness to the horrors of persecution and careers cut short, to resistance and conformity. The presentation intertwines the individual lives with the parallel strands of contemporary history and institutional frameworks. Numerous authors shed light on issues that have recently attracted sustained interest from historians. The choice of emphases reflects the history of the Lenbachhaus's collection and exhibition program. The presentation accordingly focuses on the Munich art scene, complemented by major phenomena on the national and international stages. Diversity of biographies and topics of German art history between 1918 and 1955 With works by Otto Freundlich, Kathe Hoch, Rudolf Schlichter, Maria Luiko, George Grosz, Gabriele Munter, and others Exhibition Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau October 15, 2022-April 16, 2023
