Care Ethics and Poetry is the first book to address the relationship between poetry and feminist care ethics. The authors argue that morality, and more specifically, moral progress, is a product of inquiry, imagination, and confronting new experiences. Engaging poetry, therefore, can contribute to the habits necessary for a robust moral life-specifically, caring. Hospitality is something of a modern paradox. On the one hand, hospitality connotes a nicety or pleasantry easily undervalued as a ritual or formality devoid of epistemological or ethical content. On the other hand, the rise in international conflict and violence, the decline of civil speech, and the increased hostility toward immigrants points to the dire need for hospitable responses to mitigate tensions. This text presents a feminist reappraisal of the image of the Virgin Mary, the most powerful female religious figure in Western civilization. She is also a popular figure, as demonstrated by the ongoing "cult of Mary" that includes flocks of believers who pilgrimage to the place of her sighting. Yet the official image of Mary is a troubling one. In traditional Catholicism, she is venerated for her humility, her lowliness in the sight of God, and her perpetual virginity. Christian feminists challenge this sexist portrayal, which reinforces oppression against women. They propose instead an image of a stronger, more independent Mary. This work covers this struggle to control the imagery of Mary, illustrating how Mary is central to the Church's moral control over Catholic women and therefore pivotal in any movement for change. It promotes an imagery which attempts to recover the ancient concept of every woman's participation in the divinity of Mary, which proposes transcendence, not divination, to maintain women's active participation in Catholicism.
