The Dynamics of the Wealth of Nations - Growth, Distribution and Structural Change (Hardcover): Mauro Baranzini, G. Harcourt The Dynamics of the Wealth of Nations - Growth, Distribution and Structural Change (Hardcover)
Mauro Baranzini, G. Harcourt
R4,398 Discovery Miles 43 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of essays attempts to evaluate Luigi Pasinetti's contribution and to give new insights into the issues which he has illuminated. The volume also provides a general assessment of the significance of a number of key issues of the 'pure' Post-Keynesian School of economic thought, which has, and still has, its strong hold in the University of Cambridge, and to which Luigi Pasinetti has become the 'senior heir' since the deaths of the founding members, Piero Sraffa, Joan Robinson, Nicholas Kaldor and Richard Kahn in the 1980s.

This study examines five decades of Italian economists who studied or researched at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge between the years 1950 and 2000. Providing a detailed list of Italian economists associated with Hicks, Harrod, Bacharach, Flemming, Mirrlees, Sen and other distinguished dons, the authors examine eleven research lines, including the Sraffa and the neo-Ricardian school, the post-Keynesian school and the Stone's and Goodwin's schools. Baranzini and Mirante trace the influence of the schools in terms of 1) their fundamental role in the evolution of economic thought; 2) their promotion of four key controversies (on the measurement of technical progress, on capital theory, on income distribution and on the inter-generational transmission of wealth); 3) the counter-flow of Oxbridge scholars to academia in Italy, and 4) the invigoration of a third generation of Italian economists researching or teaching at Oxbridge today. A must-read for all those interested in the way Italian and British research has shaped the study and teaching of economics.

The Economic Theory of Structure and Change (Paperback): Mauro Baranzini, Roberto Scazzieri The Economic Theory of Structure and Change (Paperback)
Mauro Baranzini, Roberto Scazzieri
R1,441 Discovery Miles 14 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume, first published in 1991, represents a wide-ranging inquiry into the general field of structural economic analysis and provides a thorough appraisal of the method of economic dynamics. It comprises nine original essays by distinguished scholars, all of which assess different aspects of the concept of economic structure. The analytical contribution of the volume is to draw attention to the relationship between 'horizontal' and 'vertical' treatments of economic structure that have characterized economic theory. The former focuses on the circular character of economic relationships, as exemplified in the Quesnay-Leontief literature, while the latter concentrates on the relationships between the 'fund' of productive resources and the production of finished goods. Perhaps the most important contribution of the volume is to provide a linkage between the two approaches and to put forward a new conceptual framework that combines an appreciation for the importance of technical relationships with a recognition of the institutional arrangements in the economic system.

A Theory of Wealth Distribution and Accumulation (Hardcover): Mauro Baranzini A Theory of Wealth Distribution and Accumulation (Hardcover)
Mauro Baranzini
R7,250 Discovery Miles 72 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume provides a general framework for a macroeconomic theory of income distribution and wealth distribution and accumulation. The book is divided into two parts. In the first the author surveys the sets of literature on the subject and relates them to each other. In the second part he makes his own contribution by presenting a new model which uses both neo-classical and post-Keynesian analytical tools. The author focuses on the laws which regulate the behavior of individuals and social groups within a given institutional set-up, and in particular those which regulate the accumulation of inter-generational wealth and life-cycle savings of families or dynasties, both in a deterministic and stochastic context. The theoretical issue of savings accumulation is reconsidered, alongside income distribution, and profit determination by concentrating on the historical reasons that are at the basis of "class distinction," as well as "generation distinction," in modern economic analysis.
