This collection assembles 25 articles published by Raymond
Arveiller as ongoing addenda to "FEW XIX (Orientalia)" in the
Zeitschrift fA1/4r romanische Philologie (ZrP) between 1969 and
1996. It thus supplements "FEW XIX (Orientalia)," which was
completed in 1967 and was therefore unable to take into account
various sources explored by Arveiller in the last 30 years. As
Arveiller died in 1996, the supplements have been assembled
unchanged in a special Supplement Volume, with only obvious
printing errors emended. It was of course indispensable to compile
a new bibliography to accommodate the numerous sources newly drawn
on by the author and quoted at the beginning of the articles in the
ZrP. The bibliography also encompasses those articles by Arveiller
on oriental elements that are not listed in the ZrP addenda. The
present volume is an indispensable supplement to "FEW Vol. XIX" and
places the study of the oriental elements in Gallo-Romance studies
on a new footing in keeping with the state of present-day research.
The 7th edition was prepared by Gerhard Rohlfs in 1974. For the new
8th edition (1996) it has been subjected to further careful
revision. Most of the additions and corrections are to be found in
the Bibliography, but there are also some slight modifications to
the text itself and the Glossary.

Anlasslich des 60. Geburtstages von Max Pfister haben Freunde und
Mitarbeiter eine Gratulationsschrift vorbereitet, deren Betrage
sich ausschliesslich mit seinem zentralen Werk, dem "Lessico
Etimologico Italiano (LEI)" befassen.
Wortgeschichte enthalt seinen eigenen Qualitaten, Uberlegungen,
Theoreme, Uberraschungen - und sein wortgeschichtliches Fundament.
The Lessico etimologico italiano provides: 1. The first fundamental
etymological dictionary that systematically takes into account
written Italian and the Italian dialects. 2. The first Italian
etymological dictionary that corresponds to the FEW in its
structure and presents the Italian vocabulary in the general
context of Romance languages. Taking the etymon as a starting
point, it is attempted to present the etymology of each word,
taking into account sociocultural and geographical aspects. 3.
Systematic, chronologically ordered citations for each spelling and
each meaning; bibliographical notes at the end of each article,
which are based on the current state of research. 4. Alphabetical
glossary at the end of each volume, including an index of
derivational morphemes.
