Philosophy developed as a form of rational inquiry practised in the
cities of Ancient Greece. It involves the pursuit of wisdom and is
both the predecessor and the complement of science, developing
those issues that underlie science, and pondering those questions
that are beyond the scope of science. In spite of a reputation as a
difficult and abstract subject, philosophy is inseparable from our
daily life. It has to do with our ideas of ourselves and the
universe, and understanding the self and our existential space in
the world. Philosophy in education and research maps the
relationship between philosophy and research with the objective of
advancing critical thinking skills.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

John Briscoe's new edition of the \plain\fs24\i1 Facta et Dicta
Memorabilia\plain\fs24 of Valerius Maximus replaces that of K.
Kempf, which was published in 1888. Kempf based his apparatus on
the two oldest manuscripts known to him, \plain\fs24\i1 Berne
Burgerbibliothek 366 (A) \plain\fs24 and \plain\fs24\i1 Florence
Med. Laur. Ashburnham 1899 (L) \plain\fs24 . It is now clear,
however, that account must also be taken of the next oldest
manuscript, \plain\fs24\i1 Brussels Biblioth\'e8que Royale 5336 (G)
\plain\fs24 .\par\pard\s1\sa100\sb100\li0\plain\fs24 Correcting and
building on the material collected by Kempf in his edition of 1854,
Briscoe includes testimonia in the form of passages from other
authors which refer to the matters discussed by Valerius, while his
\plain\fs24\i1 index nominum\plain\fs24 makes use of
prosopographical research to correct and amplify Kempf's 1888
index.\par\pard\s1\sa100\sb100\li0\plain\fs24\b1 Note: \plain\fs24
