The 21st century is often characterized as the age of
globalization, with the world's economies becoming more and more
interconnected at an unprecedented rate. And while the phenomenon
of globalization isn't necessarily new, it has taken on a
drastically different form since the 1980s: competition amongst
multinational and global organizations is more intense, and
non-Western multinationals are now emerging as important players in
the global economy. Today, professional managers need to reconcile
the opportunities and challenges associated with the rapid growth
of Asian, Eastern European, and Latin American countries. To do so,
adopting what's called 'the global mindset' is becoming an
essential skill for managers within these global organizations. The
key advantages of developing a global mindset are many. In Global
Organizations: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Future, authors
Rabi S. Bhagat, Annette S. McDevitt, and B. Ram Baliga offers an
insightful and comprehensive overview of the most important issues
today for managers looking to develop and nurture their own global
mindset for their company's future. Global Organizations expertly
provides readers with research- and evidence-based knowledge on the
significance of developing a sophisticated global mindset
regardless of national identity or geographic locale.
America won the Revolutionary War against all odds. They were
outnumbered and outmaneuvered for the majority of the war, but a
few strategic wins turned the tables. One such strategic encounter
occurred after the war was won-in Danbury, the British planned a
massive raid on Danbury's magazine of stores in April 1777. Robert
McDevitt outlines the leading causes and comprehensive history of
this tumultuous time from a British viewpoint. As one phase of the
Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial
Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range
of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined
Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared]
yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the
birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on
the field of battle.
Why does one child and not another in a normal family develop a
behavior problem? If a child is sensitive and likely to complain,
how does that affect the quality and quantity of the medical care
provided? What happens to the neurologically intact child who has
trouble paying attention in school?Children's temperaments make a
substantial contribution to their environments and their
interactions with them. Certain of these largely inborn behavioral
style differences, which are not abnormal in themselves, may lead
to clinical problems by predisposing children to abrasive,
incompatible relationships with caregivers. In this book, William B.
Carey and Sean C. McDevitt present a clear, concise summary of the
recent clinical research on temperament, in particular from the
last ten years, coupled with practical suggestions on how to use
this information in a variety of clinical and educational settings.
These management strategies were assembled from their own extensive
clinical experience and that of others. They take the
professional--psychologist, physician, nurse, teacher, day care
worker, and social worker--through all the stages of a child's life
to show how the effects of temperament play out in infancy, the
preschool years, middle childhood, and adolescence.Richly
illustrated with detailed case examples, this outstanding book
brings theory and practice to life and shows how all who work with
children can improve their care by understanding these important
differences.
A beautiful collection of 100 pieces of writing - poems, prose,
letters, speeches, song lyrics, quotations, and more - from
Shakespeare to Dr Seuss and from Oliver Jeffers to Rosa Parks,
which are in turn powerful, funny, moving, wise, and
thought-provoking - a perfect way to inspire a life-long love of
reads, expertly curated and with accessible, thoughtful commentary
by Nicolette Jones, children's book critic for The Sunday Times.
As Britain's great power status came to be increasingly challenged
in the decades before the First World War, one by-product of the
resultant uncertainty was the weakening of the Victorian,
middle-class consensus of what constituted ideal manhood. Britain's
empire was not only the source of wealth and power, but it
simultaneously provided alternative models of masculinity and
nationhood. Consequently, the empire and the commonwealth played an
important role in defining imperial gender relations in both
Britain and in the colonies and dominions. May The Best Man Win
investigates the continual re-assessment and reassertion of various
masculine ideals associated with sport in the British empire
between 1880 and 1935.
Featuring the cheerful type-driven art of Mary Kate McDevitt (Mini

Goals, one side for Major Goals-featuring lightly-guided pages in
the One-Line-A-Day mould.
Child Development and Education bridges the gap between theory and
practice, showing those who teach and care for infants, children,
and adolescents how to apply developmental research and theory to
everyday practice. More so than any other text, Child Development
and Education not only describes developmental phenomena--for
infants through late adolescence--but also faciliates observations
of and analyses of what children say, do, and create, ensuring that
educators can make informed decisions that meet children's and
adolescent's needs. New to the fifth edition is a sensitivity to
the cultural and bioecological nature of development. New features
of the text situate children and adolescents in the contexts of
their upbringing and articulate the implications of these
experiences for educators and other professionals. Illustrated is
the diverse nature of development and how it is influenced by
social, environmental, and cultural contexts. Also new to this
edition is support for teacher licensure preparation. Teacher
candidates are alerted to developmental concepts and theorists they
need to know, and are provided practice test questions and case
studies to review, demonstrating for them how to prepare for their
licensure exam.
Algorithmic Culture: How Big Data and Artificial Intelligence are
Transforming Everyday Life explores the complex ways in which
algorithms and big data, or algorithmic culture, are simultaneously
reshaping everyday culture while perpetuating inequality and
intersectional discrimination. Contributors situate issues of
humanity, identity, and culture in relation to free will,
surveillance, capitalism, neoliberalism, consumerism, solipsism,
and creativity, offering a critique of the myriad constraints
enacted by algorithms. This book argues that consumers are
undergoing an ontological overhaul due to the enhanced
manipulability and increasingly mandatory nature of algorithms in
the market, while also positing that algorithms may help navigate
through chaos that is intrinsically present in the market
democracy. Ultimately, Algorithmic Culture calls attention to the
present-day cultural landscape as a whole as it has been
reconfigured and re-presented by algorithms.
Xi Jinping has made his ambitions for the People's Liberation Army
(PLA) perfectly clear, there is no mystery what he wants, first,
that China should become a "great maritime power" and secondly,
that the PLA "become a world-class armed force by 2050." He wants
this latter objective to be largely completed by 2035. China as a
Twenty-First-Century Naval Power focuses on China's navy and how it
is being transformed to satisfy the "world class" goal. Beginning
with an exploration of why China is seeking to become such a major
maritime power, author Michael McDevitt first explores the
strategic rationale behind Xi's two objectives. China's reliance on
foreign trade and overseas interests such as China's Belt and Road
strategy. In turn this has created concerns within the senior
levels of China's military about the vulnerability of its overseas
interests and maritime life-lines. is a major theme. McDevitt dubs
this China's "sea lane anxiety" and traces how this has required
the PLA Navy to evolve from a "near seas"-focused navy to one that
has global reach; a "blue water navy." He details how quickly this
transformation has taken place, thanks to a patient step-by-step
approach and abundant funding. The more than 10 years of
anti-piracy patrols in the far reaches of the Indian Ocean has
acted as a learning curve accelerator to "blue water" status.
McDevitt then explores the PLA Navy's role in the South China Sea
and the Indian Ocean. He provides a detailed assessment of what the
PLAN will be expected to do if Beijing chooses to attack Taiwan
potentially triggering combat with America's "first responders" in
East Asia, especially the U.S. Seventh Fleet and U.S. Fifth Air
Force. He conducts a close exploration of how the PLA Navy fits
into China's campaign plan aimed at keeping reinforcing U.S. forces
at arm's length (what the Pentagon calls anti-access and area
denial [A2/AD]) if war has broken out over Taiwan, or because of
attacks on U.S. allies and friends that live in the shadow of
China. McDevitt does not know how Xi defines "world class" but the
evidence from the past 15 years of building a blue water force has
already made the PLA Navy the second largest globally capable navy
in the world. This book concludes with a forecast of what Xi's
vision of a "world-class navy" might look like in the next fifteen
years when the 2035 deadline is reached.
The first reference work to draw together the stories and studies
of women in the American Civil War, this annotated bibliography
offers access to the literature that documents the history of women
who experienced the war, changed it, and were changed by it.
Offering nearly 800 entries, it lists both primary and secondary
sources, classic and current works, and items in print and
available on the Internet. Drawing together over one hundred years
of writings, Women in the American Civil War: An Annotated
Bibliography is an invaluable resource for readers and researchers
interested in this neglected topic. During the American Civil War
women played a highly significant role, yet modern writers often
overlook their experiences and contributions. Women in the American
Civil War: An Annotated Bibliography is the first reference work to
focus exclusively on women in the war. Sections list sources on
such diverse topics as women as nurses and medical relief workers,
women's changing economic roles, their lives as refugees, as spies
and scouts, or in military camps. It also looks at the literature
on the miscellaneous topics of women in public, wives of
politicians and military commanders, family life, and women on the
wrong side of the law.
This book describes a global assessment of stem cell engineering
research, achieved through site visits by a panel of experts to
leading institutes, followed by dedicated workshops. The assessment
made clear that engineers and the engineering approach with its
quantitative, system-based thinking can contribute much to the
progress of stem cell research and development. The increased need
for complex computational models and new, innovative technologies,
such as high-throughput screening techniques, organ-on-a-chip
models and in vitro tumor models require an increasing involvement
of engineers and physical scientists. Additionally, this book will
show that although the US is still in a leadership position in stem
cell engineering, Asian countries such as Japan, China and Korea,
as well as European countries like the UK, Germany, Sweden and the
Netherlands are rapidly expanding their investments in the field.
Strategic partnerships between countries could lead to major
advances of the field and scalable expansion and differentiation of
stem cells. This study was funded by the National Science
Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Deep Down Things: Essays on Catholic Culture explores common
threads that characterize Catholicism. The contributors look
successively at: Catholic culture and everyday life of the parish
and of work, at Catholic culture and the imaginative life of poets
and fiction writers, and at Catholic culture and postmodern life
where individual conscience, skepticism, and relativism challenge
Church authority and faith itself. They do so while looking for
foundational components that persist and comprise a culture that
Catholics recognize regardless of their diverse ethnicity,
geographic location, or historical epoch. The authors of this
collection have aimed to inspire both Catholics and non-Catholics
alike, inside and outside the academic community, to deepen their
own knowledge and appreciation of the Christian tradition generally
and Catholic culture particularly. The authors hope to encourage
sincere and open dialogue about Catholic culture (in the best
tradition of Catholic thought) both to further the inquiry after
truth and to enhance fruitful reflection upon Catholic culture and
its contributions over time and across cultures.
This is the first systematic study of modern China's military
campaigns and the actual fighting conducted by the People's
Liberation Army since the founding of the People's Republic. It
provides a general overview of the evolution of PLA military
doctrine, and then focuses on major combat episodes from the civil
war with the Nationalists to the last significant combat in Vietnam
in 1979, in addition to navy and air operations through 1999. In
contrast to the many works on the specifics and hardware of China's
military modernization, this book discusses such topics as military
planning, command, and control; fighting and politics; combat
tactics and performance; technological catch-up and doctrinal
flexibility; the role of Mao Zedong; scale and typologies of
fighting; and deterrence. The contributors include scholars from
Mainland China, Taiwan, and the United States, who draw from a
wealth of fresh archival sources.
