This book is about algebraic and differential methods, as well as
fractional calculus, applied to diagnose and reject faults in
nonlinear systems, which are of integer or fractional order. This
represents an extension of a very important and widely studied
problem in control theory, namely fault diagnosis and rejection
(using differential algebraic approaches), to systems presenting
fractional dynamics, i.e. systems whose dynamics are represented by
derivatives and integrals of non-integer order. The authors offer a
thorough overview devoted to fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant
control applied to fractional-order and integer-order dynamical
systems, and they introduce new methodologies for control and
observation described by fractional and integer models, together
with successful simulations and real-time applications. The basic
concepts and tools of mathematics required to understand the
methodologies proposed are all clearly introduced and explained.
Consequently, the book is useful as supplementary reading in
courses of applied mathematics and nonlinear control theory. This
book is meant for engineers, mathematicians, physicists and, in
general, to researchers and postgraduate students in diverse areas
who have a minimum knowledge of calculus. It also contains advanced
topics for researchers and professionals interested in the area of
states and faults estimation.
This book is an examination of neighborhood mobilization and
engagement from the perspective of several disciplines: psychology,
social work, political science, planning, and education. The essays
included in the work examine both internal and external factors
related to the ability of neighborhoods to meet the human needs of
their residents. They address the constraints put on neighborhood
mobilization by the local and international political economy, but
they also show how those constraints can, in a number of cases, be
overcome by effective action. They treat neighborhood engagement as
an educational process through which residents enhance their skills
and knowledge as they participate. Taken together, these essays
provide a comprehensive and multi-faceted view of the issues facing
contemporary urban neighborhoods.
This is a tale about a dream come true. The story of a boy's
longing to belong to a home, a family, a country. Rejected as a
baby by his father as well as by his mother's family, Memo, at the
age of five, is abandoned by his mother Maria at a boarding
Catholic school in Mexico, while she pursues her acting career.
After three years of beseeching, Maria takes pity and takes him to
El Salvador, where he struggles to belong to a family that treats
him as an inferior and a country that treats him as a foreigner. At
age fourteen he goes to Nicaragua, hoping his father would provide
what his Salvadorian family has not. His father wants nothing to do
with him By a quirk of destiny, Memo becomes a Radio and T.V. teen
star in El Salvador. But he soon realizes that, by pursuing acting
he has given up his education thus surrendering his future for an
uncertain present. A lover of American movies, he spends all his
free time in movie theaters dreaming about living in America, a
country that seems to have it all. He decides that only in America
would he be able to realize his dreams. He implores his cousin
Violeta, who lives in the United States, to sponsor him. After
several years of pleading, Violeta acquiesces; but he will have to
finance his trip. Memo starts the long legal process. Meanwhile, he
saves all his money to pay for the trip. He returns to Nicaragua to
ask his father for help. His father rejects him and wishes him
failure. Memo will have to do it alone. At last he overcomes all
obstacles and boards an airplane bound for America. What will he
learn there? Memo cannot wait to find out.
During the early 1940s, young Mateo's favorite pastime is exploring
the mountains near his home. He and his friends have heard the
rumors about the seven mysterious cities of Cibola where the walls
and streets are covered with gold and gemstones and Aztlan, the
ancestral homeland of the Aztec. The friends intend to find the
treasures buried within the lost cities. Seeking to escape the
poverty in his small ranching community, Mateo continues to search
the mountains at every opportunity, and he narrowly escapes dying
there after finding what he imagines are veins of gemstones and
other precious minerals. He also finds a grotto with a strange
obelisk and several mummy-like individuals. Since his best friend,
Modesto, has moved to California, Mateo confides in the village
blacksmith, an old man who has been there for more years than
people care to remember. But a greedy villager overhears their
conversation, and that person becomes Mateo's mortal enemy.

This book systematically explores the trade and environment
interests of developing countries from a Southern perspective. The
contributors write explicitly about both the fears and hopes in the
South regarding trade and environment negotiations. Essays are from
leading experts and thought leaders from various regions of the
South and work to envision new, bold agendas and priorities for
their region.
In spite of considerable efforts over the years to understand and
combat materials degradation via corrosion processes, many
challenges still remain both in the theoretical understanding of
the phenomena and in seeking pratical solutions to the perennial
problem. Progress has been slow due to the complexity of the
processes and the systems involved. Fortunately, in recent years
there has been a renaissance in the development of new
electrochemical and optical techniques, as well as advances in
instrumentation, which have greatly aided our quest to gain insight
into the complex mechanisms involved in metallic corrosion and
passivation. Numerous scientific meetings, symposia, and workshops
have been held allover the world which attest to the frenzy of
activities in corrosion science and technology. However, most of
these conferences have dealt mainly with recent research results.
There appeared to be a need to assess and disseminate our present
state of knowledge in the field as regards measurement techniques,
theory, and instrumentation. The present NATO Advanced Study
Institute was therefore held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal from
July 9 to 21, 1989. The Institute consisted of a series of tutorial
lectures, poster sessions, and round-table discussions interspersed
evenly over the two-week period. It was attended by 75 participants
from several countries representing industry, government and
university laboratories.
Against a historical backdrop whose origins go back to the US's
acquisition of Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American War, the author
examines in close detail the evolution of the statehood movement in
that territory. . . . This volume will interest mostly professional
scholars, graduate students, and general readers attuned to the
Puerto Rican statehood issue and to such matters as ethnicity and
constitutional development in societies still governed from a
distant metropole- in this case, from Washington DC. The book is
generally well written and readable. It contains a useful
bibliography on the Puerto Rican statehood movement and a
servicable index. Choice Melendez presents the first comprehensive
treatment of the statehood movement in Puerto Rico from the
nineteenth century to the present day. Broad in scope, the
discussion encompasses every major aspect of
annexationism--programs, ideology, politics, changing support for
statehood within the United States, and the influential role of the
New Progressive Party--and offers a groundbreaking comparative
analysis of statehood activities, parties, and conceptions
throughout the history of the movement. Throughout, Melendez places
particular emphasis on major changes and transformations in the
movement, enabling the student of Puerto Rican politics to
construct a more comprehensive picture of the evolution of Puerto
Rican annexationism than has yet been available.
Considering the high level of our knowledge concerning covalent
bond formation in the organic chemistry of molecules, our
understanding of the principles involved in organic solid design is
almost in its infancy. While chemists today are able to synthesize
organic molecules of very high complexity using sophisticated
methods of preparation, they lack general approaches enabling them
to reliably predict organic crystalline or solid structures from
molecular descriptors - no matter how simple they are. On the other
hand, nearly all the organic matter surrounding us is not in the
single-molecule state but aggregated and condensed to form liquid
or solid molecular assemblages and structural arrays giving rise to
the appearances and properties of organic compounds we usually
observe. Obviously, the electrical, optical or magnetic properties
of solid organic materials that are important requirements for
future technologies and high-tech applications, as well as the
stability and solubility behavior of a medicament depend on the
structure of the molecule and the intramolecular forces, but even
more decisively on the intermolecular forces, i. e. the packing
structure of the molecules to which a general approach is lacking.
This situation concerned ]. Maddox some years ago to such a degree
that he described it as "one of the continuing scandals in the
physical sciences" [see (1998) Nature 335:201; see also Ball, P.
(1996) Nature 381:648]. The problem of predicting organic solid and
crystal structures is very dif- cult.
Synchrotron Techniques in Interfacial Chemistry covers the
structure of the electrode--solution interface and surface films,
theory of X-ray scattering at surfaces and interfaces, synchrotron
radiation instrumentation, surface X-ray diffraction, X-ray
reflectivity, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES),
standing wave techniques, and IR spectroscopy. The use of each
technique in the study of electrochemical problems is illustrated.
Accompanying a major exhibition at The Museum at FIT, Latin
American and Latinx Fashion Design Today: ¡Moda Hoy! examines
Latin American and Latinx fashion design from the past 20 years,
asking “What is Latin American fashion design in the 21st
century”? The book seeks to explore the sociohistorical
influences and cultural dynamics that have propelled the
development of the unique sartorial bricolage that is Latin
American and Latinx fashion. Through a series of themes and topics
favored by contemporary designers – including Indigenous
heritage, art, sustainable design, politics, gender, elegance, and
popular culture – it highlights established designers with a
strong international presence, such as Isabel Toledo, Carolina
Herrera, Rick Owens, Oscar de la Renta, Carla Fernández, and
